Albert Street Uniting Church (Methodist & Presbyterian)

Wonderful spiritual feel
Corner Ann & Albert Streets
Brisbane, QLD 4000
+61 7 3221 6788
Viewed from King George Square this gracious church, built in 1889, merits a look, or attend a service. Inside, the stained glass windows, mostly memorial, and the timberwork of the choir stalls and pulpit are exceptional. Each group of windows has a story. The organ has 2,250 pipes altogether, some brightly painted. It was made in Manchester, England, and its romantic character has been preserved through rebuilds over the years. The shop sells souvenirs.

Art Deco Memorial in Hyde Park
Hyde Park
Sydney, NSW 2000
+61 2 9267 7668
Situated at the southern end of Hyde Park, at the head of the Pool of Remembrance, this imposing Art Deco building stands 30 metres tall. Built in 1934 to commemorate Australia's war dead, it contains the Tomb of The Unknown Soldier and a small museum with photographic and military artefacts. The central statue highlights the fragility of man and the huge sacrifice some are willing to make for others.

A large pastoral team of caring people offers far more than Sunday services at this very modern Baptist church, built in 1988.

Spacious and airy, it is well designed to prevent summer heat from distracting those involved in the many activities.

From a play centre for toddlers and a kids' club, to Marriage Preparation Classes and a Young Marrieds' group. An adult bible class, home groups and crisis counselling is available and there is a very popular creative craft morning (Thursday 9.30am).

Services: 10am Morning Worship; 6.30pm Evening Worship (Sun)

Cenotaph

In Martin Place
Martin Place
Sydney, NSW 2000
+61 2 9255 1788
Designed by Sir Edgar Bertram Mackennal, the first Australian artist to be knighted, The Cenotaph, located between Pitt and George Streets, is the ceremonial focus for remembering the war dead. It sits in a wide, simple space, designed not to detract from the symbolism. It is the centrepiece of wreath-laying ceremonies and dawn service on ANZAC Day, April 25. Prior to Martin Place becoming a pedestrian thoroughfare, the Centotaph was located in the middle of the road.

A delight for the eyes--both interior and exterior--this is the only catholic cathedral within Adelaide. The first Bishop of Adelaide is buried inside the church.

The cathedral tower has the largest peal of bells in the state (13 in total) and the heaviest peal in all of Australia. Established in 1858 and subsequently heritage listed, a visit here will surely confirm humanity's reverence for the Lord.

Telling pioneer tales
Bronte Street
East Perth, WA 6005
+61 8 9321 6088
http://www.ntwa.com.au/places/...
Visit this historic cemetery for a fascinating insight in the original Swan River Colony. Dating back to 1829, there are less than 800 graves and family vaults remaining but each tells a tale of the pioneer experience. The artistic style of the tombstones reflects the early colonial era and the last burial was in 1919 although the family vaults remain in use to this day. The tranquil grounds are home to a gothic style chapel, Saint Bartholomew's, built in 1871. Admission: adults AUD4, children and concession AUD2, and group bookings can be done for AUD2. Free for members.

Flagstaff Gardens

A patch of green in the heart of the city
Opposite Latrobe Street
Melbourne, VIC 3000
Set in the heart of the city, these gardens are a Mecca for lunchtime office workers. The original pines and gums have been replaced with shady oaks and elms, ideal for finding a quiet shady spot to eat a quick sandwich. Being on a hill with one of the best views over Port Phillip Bay, Flagstaff Gardens were named after the flagstaff that used to be raised to announce the arrival of a British ship carrying more new immigrants. The grounds were also an early pioneer burial site, as well as an important Aboriginal meeting place. A walking tour has recently been laid out with markers, giving visitors the opportunity to see the two sides of its history.

New Norcia, founded in 1846 by Dom Rosendo Salvado, proves a unique place to visit. If it were not for the presence of the Benedictine Order, it is doubtful New Norcia would have come to exist. The Order's church, monastery, convent and other imposing buildings seem almost out of place in this small town. The Abbey church, the oldest active Catholic church in Western Australia, houses the tomb of Dom Salvado. The associated art gallery features a wonderful display of post-Renaissance art. Do not miss the monastery bakery, it is fantastic.

The Lutheran Church in Western Australia began in the 1880s when several Lutheran families migrated from the Barossa Valley near Adelaide. After worshipping in church halls and their own school, they built the tiny but striking Saint John's in 1936. Situated across the road from Perth Central TAFE, in the busy Northbridge area of Perth, St John's is equally busy on Saturdays and Sundays. Apart from worship services the church also offers numerous social activities. Pastors are Reverend Geoff Burger and Julian Bayha.

A masterpiece of Gothic architecture, the foundation stones for St Mary's Chapel were laid by Governor Lachlan Macquarie in 1821. The cathedral finally opened in 1900, although work continued until 1928 and really only recently finished. Wardell's original design had two spires that were never built. After ten years' debate and political fund-raising, the twin spires were finally completed in 2000.

St. John's Cathedral - Stonemason's Tour

History in the making
373 Ann Street
Brisbane, QLD 4001
When fully completed in 2006, the magnificent St. John's Cathedral will be half the size of Sir Christopher Wren's masterpiece, St. Paul's Cathedral in London. The construction, spanning 100 years, is one of Queensland's most memorable architectural achievements. The free tours are a wonderful way to watch the stonemasons in action and appreciate the skill and creativity that goes into such a wondrous project. With only the approaches and front section to be completed, this is a rare opportunity indeed to discover the craft that is required to create a French neo-Gothic style building.

Designed in an early English Gothic style, construction began in 1863, but due to lack of funds this Cathedral was not ready for use until 1874, twenty-four years after the small St. Stephen's Church (chapel) was built. The larger cathedral was needed to cater for the growth in Brisbane's population. The main facade of porphyry stone features twin spires and very elaborate stained glass windows. Inside feel the spirituality of an age-old structure as you gaze at the religious works of art. Throughout the year the Jubilee Choir can be heard. Services: 8am, 10am, 12.30pm, 5.10pm Benediction 12.15pm Mon- Fri; 6pm Vigil Sat; 8am, 10am, noon & 7.30pm Sun Mass
