Few sporting spectacles rival the Australian Football League (AFL)Grand Final. It is played by the two most successful teams at the end of the season. Around 110,000 people cram the MCG, while millions watch the telecast world-wide. The lead up to the big game is frenetic with saturation coverage in the media. A highlight is the parade of the two competing teams through city streets on the Friday before the game. Tickets are hard to obtain, with most going to club members, sponsors and the media. The Adelaide Cup is South Australia's most prestigious horse race and has been since a flier named "Falcon" led the first field home in 1864. The race - a 3,200 metre handicap - has been run at Morphettville since 1876. Big race day is a public holiday in South Australia, and each year thousands of race-goers line the track or lounge in hospitality suites, many dressed in swish outfits and outlandish hats. Australia's most solemn national day |
Various locations Brisbane, QLD +61 7 3006 6200 http://www.anzacday.org.au |
Anzac Day became a public holiday in the early 1920s, marked by the landing of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) at Gallipoli in 1915. War veterans are remembered in Brisbane's inner city by a number of ceremonies, starting at around 4am with the dawn service at King George Square and peaking with the street procession. This parade of returned servicemen, their relatives and a number of marching bands takes place before a massive crowd. There is a 30-minute service held in Anzac Square, after which the pubs open their doors and everyone has a drink and a game of Two-Up. The ceremony is broadcast on television. Beginning with the haunting notes of a bugle playing 'The Last Post' at dawn services across Sydney, Anzac Day is a time when Australia stops and reflects on the service of Australia and New Zealand Army Corps troops. This public holiday (most shops are shut) is commemorated on the day itself, the main event being the parade beginning in George Street, in which returned servicemen and their relatives march in uniform before thousands of Sydneysiders who turn out rain, hail or shine to pay their respects. Take a bunch of incredibly talented South Australian chefs, add fresh local produce, sprinkle in some know-how, mix in a worthwhile cause and you have this unique fundraising event to assist the work of Anglicare. Chefs, waiters and kitchen staff donate their time while suppliers donate ingredients, wine and auction items, so the majority of the ticket price goes straight to Anglicare. Funds raised assist Anglicare's Family Centres for families struggling with hardship. Review © 2007, Wcities |
