13th Floor

Dancing and a great view
One East Chase Street
Baltimore, MD 21202
United States
+1 410 347 0888
http://www.the13th-floor.com/i...
This nightspot offers a breathtaking view of the city from the top floor of the old Belvedere Hotel. Settle in for happy hour and watch the dusk settle over the city as its lights gradually begin to twinkle on. The calm won't last much past 9pm though. That's when local dance bands take the stage, the disco ball begins to swirl, and the club transforms into a slightly silly dash and thoroughly retro dance party. Two Saturdays a month, the Cajuns take over and local disco takes a backseat to local Zydeco.

Located at the intersection of Thames Street and Broadway, this lively little bar is at the very heart of Fells Point. It's also home to the biggest outdoor seating area in the neighborhood - a great place to sip a beer and soak up the local color. Inside, there are hardwood floors, redbrick walls and a well-stocked bar. The kitchen serves up decent bar fare, with an emphasis on fresh seafood. (Try the oysters.) On weekends, a DJ entertains, and during the week various local acoustic musicians play.

In Baltimore, Bertha's means the blues - and mussels to beat the band. Offered with your choice of eight sauces, Bertha's Mussels are plump, tender, and steamed just right. For years this Fells Point landmark has been giving out green bumper stickers that simply state: "Eat Bertha's Mussels." The rest of the seafood entrees are also very good. They, too, boast fresh ingredients and a sure touch. The décor is warm and funky, the atmosphere lively, and, on weekends, even rowdy.

If you're in town visiting someone who lives or works in Charles Village, chances are they know this very friendly, very casual neighborhood pub. This bright, friendly, upscale bar, located between Fell's Point and Canton, is a favorite nighspot for young professionals. The bare-brick interior walls, the hardwood floors, the fireplaces, the three large bars and two pool tables all make for a great environment in which to unwind after a busy day. The menu of sandwiches, wings and soups is good, but the Blue Point oysters on the half-shell are great. Oddly enough, there aren't many tables or chairs, so unless you get here early, you will be standing.

Step into this restaurant and make your day nice or maybe even nicer. A popular hang-out of youngsters and older folks as well, this place will leave you energized and refreshed. The music will rewind you to the 70s and 80s; hip-hop and disco is played constantly. Lively interiors of this place comprise a dance floor, a jukebox, huge posters of former music stars and an open bar. You can throw a party here and avail of the weekly specials. Dress hip as they are extremely fussy about dress codes and entry rules.

This tiny jewel of a bistro does many things very well. On one hand, it is a great coffee bar. On the other hand, it is a dandy wine bar, with a list that's affordable and eclectic. Then again, it is a vegetarian restaurant, boasting items like the La Luna (eggplant, greens and provolone wrapped in a pesto flatbread!). However, the seafood entrees are the best. Finally, the downstairs is a bustling café, and the upstairs a cozy, candle-lit, folk-art styled hide-away.

Tucked away on a narrow street, this bar/cafe offers a range of Southwestern standards. Start with the Mexi-Wings, Jumbo Chicken Wings drenched with habanero sauce. Then, to cool things off a bit, have a taco salad with fresh lettuce topped with jack and cheddar cheeses, onions and tomatoes, then garnished with sour cream and guacomole. For the main course, try a house specialty. The Pollo Enrollado, a boneless chicken breast stuffed with pecan-cilantro-chile pesto and topped with a sweet cream sauce, is simply divine.

The hippest place in Baltimore to see an alternative rock band is this scruffy, but chic, midtown establishment. The bar itself is very small, so many patrons stand or sit in front of the tiny stage, or wander around the multi-colored second and third floors. The bands are either unsigned locals or independent-label acts. All play loud and fast.

This pub is a favorite with all sports fans in Baltimore. Located about a couple of blocks away from the Camden Yards Stadium, it gets exceptionally packed every time there's a match on. A great place to meet up with old pals, provided you don't mind the smoke-filled air and the continuous hustle-bustle. It offers typical pub-grub, comprising of burgers and such other light fare. But it's the drinks and the general atmosphere that's bursting with energy right until the wee hours, which has the crowd streaming in day after day!

The façade of this restaurant reminds you of the twilight sky, except for the startling neon sign, that give the scene life. Cool blue interiors, with white tablecloths and woody chairs continue with the natural theme. Ask to be seated near the green marble fireplace, and relax as the staff efficiently brings in your order. Redfish Wings, the Seafood Salad and the Fiery Steak should satisfy the growling stomach. Other charmingly rustic choices would be the Clay Pot Lamb, Paella and Jambalaya. The restaurant's private dining room makes for a cozy family dinner, and the banquet room can host a party of 70. A flexible menu is available here, and you can design your own courses with the affable chef, who also takes into account the size of your wallet.

The first floor of the nightclub Redwood Trust is magically transformed into the Red Tapas restaurant for five nights each week. This interesting place in a unique, restored building, boasts of nouveau American cuisine with that exotic Spanish twist. Flamboyant interiors and efficient service lure you within. Following the Spanish tradition of 'tapas' (small plates), the portions here are not for those expecting huge shareable quantities. Choose from innovative dishes like the Espresso-Coated Beef and the Pork-stuffed Steamed Dumplings (with a ponzu glaze and orange cabbage salad). Mellow down with some drinks, while you sway to great jazz at the Tapas Bar and set the pace for the night ahead. It is said that the energetic, stylish atmosphere of the restaurant more than makes up for its unexceptional food. It all depends on what you are here for!

Set in a lovely redbrick rowhouse, this south Baltimore favorite is a great place to grab a beer and a bite. The dark wood interior is comfortable and inviting, whether you choose to sit at the long bar or in the dining room. (There're also café tables outside.) The restaurant offers a full, and very eclectic, menu, but appetizers and bar fare are what the kitchen does best. The satay is delicious, the crab cakes are first rate, and the Jambalaya is chock-full of shrimp, fish and other delights.

The pleasantly straightforward, starched-linen and fresh-flower atmosphere at this Little Italy landmark lets you know that you're in an old-school restaurant. The menu is full of old favorites - Ravioli and a Veal Parmesan that's truly noteworthy. Even the house specialties, such as the legendary Bookmaker Salad - shrimp, salami and provolone topped with a cheese dressing over crisp iceberg lettuce - has a comfortable familiarity. The chef isn't breaking any new ground here, but then again, why try to improve on the classics?
