Aldo's Ristorante Italiano

A beautiful dining experience
306 South High Street
Baltimore, MD 21202
United States
+1 410 727 0700
http://www.aldositaly.com
This lovely addition to Little Italy's restaurant scene specializes in the traditional cooking of Southern Italy, and a typical meal might include an appetizer of Fried Calamari, followed by the delectable Veal Scaloppine topped with a tasty Cannoli. But simply listing these old favorites doesn't do justice to this jewel of a restaurant, with its tuxedoed waiters, fresh cut roses and intimate dining rooms. The setting is very quiet and very romantic. Jackets are recommended for men.

Sandwiches and calzones are also on the menu, along with a list of wonderful entrees - Grilled Lamb Sirloin, Roast Breast of Free Range Chicken, and a Crab Cake platter. There's a topiary bicycle outside of this lovely Indian restaurant that perfectly accents the staid elegance you'll find inside. Located just north of the Johns Hopkins University's Homewood Campus, this restaurant's interior features dark paneling and burnished brass. It has a kind of reserved formality that's stylish without being intimidating. The Bengali Swordfish, drizzled with mango sauce is a masterpiece, as is the crab malabar. There's also a courtyard, complete with fountain, for warm weather seating.

This cozy Northeast Baltimore restaurant has occupied the same spot for almost 50 years. The downstairs is an Irish pub, well-stocked with Guinness and Harp. Upstairs, patrons will find a modest dining room specializing in Italian dishes. (Try the Seafood Spaghetti.) So what keeps an Italian/Irish establishment running for half a century in Baltimore? The crab cakes, naturally. The perfectly seasoned, lump-filled patty served here are truly a cut above.

Fells Point
Baltimore, MD 21231
United States
+1 410 327 5795
http://berthas.com/
In Baltimore, Bertha's means the blues - and mussels to beat the band. Offered with your choice of eight sauces, Bertha's Mussels are plump, tender, and steamed just right. For years this Fells Point landmark has been giving out green bumper stickers that simply state: "Eat Bertha's Mussels." The rest of the seafood entrees are also very good. They, too, boast fresh ingredients and a sure touch. The décor is warm and funky, the atmosphere lively, and, on weekends, even rowdy.

The Blue crab has always been king of Baltimore's seafood scene, but recently a new generation of restaurants has been challenging the crab's rule. The Black Olive, located in Fells Point, the heart of old Baltimore's maritime district, is perhaps the best. Only the freshest fish are displayed in The Black Olive's case, and guests can choose anything from locally caught Rockfish to more exotic fare. Selections are then grilled to perfection, filleted at tableside and served with the house's amazing Mediterranean-style sauces.

A terrific example of architectural whimsy, this Fells Point restaurant looks just like an old ship steaming silently up Boston Street bound for the neighborhood of Canton. Inside, however, the spacious and often raucous, dining area and the half-moon bar reveal it for what it is, an old-school restaurant where very good food is served at very reasonable prices. As one might expect, the seafood specialties, such as a marvelous Flounder Fillet stuffed with crabmeat are what stand out here.

Dining at this restaurant is like going to a party. There's Reggae music playing in the small, colorful dining room and the atmosphere is celebratory. The food served here will give you cause to celebrate. The menu has two sections: "Earth" and "Fire." The former includes dishes like Ox-tail Stew, Jerk Chicken and pan-fried fish served with peas and rice, black beans and steamed greens. From appetizers to dessert, everything here is bold and savory.

With its wood-paneled walls and gigantic oak bar, it's the perfect setting for hoisting a glass of Guinness or Harp and enjoying a jig or reel. The steady stream of Irish musicians is supplemented by local and national jazz, blues and zydeco acts. Munch some of the finger foods on the menu as you sip your drink. Choose from Buffalo Wings, nachos and various other delicious bites. If you're going to be here for a while, order the Chicken Wrap - it's the most popular item on the menu. Topping it all off is the tap beer - guzzle away!

If you're in town visiting someone who lives or works in Charles Village, chances are they know this very friendly, very casual neighborhood pub. It's far from fancy (vinyl booths, small tables, paneled walls dotted with sports pictures), but for a large number of Hopkins students, Charles Village bohemians and local business people, it's a homely place to grab a beer and burger. There are about 30 beers available, bottled and on tap, and the sandwiches, salads and other bar-fare items are hearty and modestly priced.

It's easy to forget - except, of course during the sweltering summer months - that Baltimore is, essentially, a southern town. But it's always easy to appreciate this downtown restaurant's elegant, yet simple, French-inspired Southern cuisine. Take the fried oysters, for instance, in their golden-brown cornmeal batter, or the crab soup that's as creamy as most bisques. These are true examples of gracious living. Add the tranquil, pastel-colored decor and the expert service and you come up with a most enjoyable dining experience.

There's an edgy, urban energy to this small eatery, located in the lovely midtown neighborhood of Mount Vernon. The crisp, black and white décor is simple to the point of being severe and the very large front windows provide a good view of the surrounding urban bustle. The inside is generally crowded too, especially the front take-out area. In back, table service, and you'll find some excellent Nouvelle American cuisine. Hampden is one of Baltimore's funkier blue-collar neighborhoods, and this busy establishment is its answer to the chic upscale bars of Federal Hill and Canton. By all accounts it holds up very well. During weeknight happy hours, the place is packed with young urban professionals who amble in for the great drink specials and the excellent bar fare, which includes steaks, hamburgers and seafood dishes. The dimly lit dining room is a bit cavernous, but a large collection of stuffed ducks and vintage photographs give it a homey touch.

Style and elegance have blended beautifully at Gardel's. Take note of the ornate cast-iron facade near the entrance. The décor is even more charming inside—wooden dance floors, candle lit tables, high ceilings and hand-blown glass chandeliers all revive an era bygone. A dressed-to-impress crowd with a love and talent for Salsa is seen at this club most of the nights. Argentine Tango, Salsa, and Jazz ensembles beckon you to shake hip on the dance floor. Latin dancing lessons are on as well! The menu comprises flamboyant cuisines from Argentina, Brazil and Columbia.

This small restaurant combines a casual atmosphere with excellent food. Here, the cacti centerpieces, the giant lizard over the bar and other Southwestern touches let you know you're in for a spicy experience. And the food doesn't disappoint. The Smoked Shrimp Quesadilla and the Grilled Tequilla Shrimp are both fantastic. And how can you not fall for a place where the kitchen makes its own tortilla chips. This tiny jewel of a bistro does many things very well. On one hand, it is a great coffee bar. On the other hand, it is a dandy wine bar, with a list that's affordable and eclectic. Then again, it is a vegetarian restaurant, boasting items like the La Luna (eggplant, greens and provolone wrapped in a pesto flatbread!). However, the seafood entrees are the best. Finally, the downstairs is a bustling café, and the upstairs a cozy, candle-lit, folk-art styled hide-away.

In a lot of ways the northwest Baltimore neighborhood of Hampden is like a blue-collar Greenwich Village. There's a decidedly bohemian tint to the place, and it has the art galleries to prove it, but the area also has a down-home side. This tiny establishment (there are 12 tables because 13 wouldn't fit) is a great example. The Burritos, Chiles Rellenos, Tacos and Quesadillas served here show Mexican cooking at its simplest and best. The ingredients are fresh, the prices are low and the portions are mammoth.

Located in the historic but funky Fells Point neighborhood, Kali's Court brings a Greek sensibility to traditional Maryland seafood favorites, there's Orzo pasta floating in the crab soup, for example. With its high-ceilings and darkly polished furnishings, this fine restaurant has a casual elegance that makes it as appropriate for a romantic evening as well as for a friendly night out. Kali's also boasts a lovely brick courtyard for al fresco dining, but be sure to call ahead and reserve a table.

Named after Baltimore's sister city, this is the city's oldest continuously open Japanese restaurant. Paper lanterns and rows of chopsticks in a handsome glass case add an air of authenticity to the decor. For starters, try an intriguing combination of sushi, chef's choice. If you're not willing to leave your palette in the chef's hands, order the smoked salmon or raw tuna rolls. For an entree, consider the vegetarian sushi dinner or the Chicken Katsu, white meat fried to a golden brown. Cash is accepted also.

This restaurant attracts huge crowds. It has a perfect combination of good food and a great view of Baltimore's dock. A sister concern of the Kawasaki restaurant in Baltimore, this joint offers Japanese, American and Mediterranean fare. That apart, the cafe loves to experiment and you'd be wise to ask about the meal of the day. Choose between the shrimp, vegetable and combination Tempuras. Try the Eel Roll or the Oshinko & Carrot Roll. Relish the soups like the Zaru Soba and Cold Udon. Check out the dishes from the sushi bar like Sushi and Sashami Combo. If you haven't already, do visit the Kawasaki restaurant in the same city.

http://www.kibbysrestaurant.com
This longtime Baltimore favorite is something of an anomaly; in a city where crab cakes are king, its signature seafood dish is shrimp salad. On closer examination, it's easy to see why. The shrimp are big, perfectly steamed, and dressed in a savory sauce. And the portions are huge. The rest of the hearty American fare (like a great Prime Rib) is also very nice. The restaurant has a casual, homey feel, with comfortable booths, dark paneling and a very friendly staff.

A newcomer to Little Italy, this spirited restaurant does Italian cuisine with a bit of modern flair, and the emphasis is on seafood. Here the tortelloni is stuffed with ground grouper as well as ricotta cheese, and the list of specials is more likely to include tuna than veal. The Insalata Di Mare, a shrimp, clam, scallop, squid and mussel salad with an orange flavored dressing, is a must. After taking a walk at the Inner Harbor, head towards the hard to miss joint, Mondo Bondo. It is housed in a century-old building, called the Power Plant. The same structure also houses the likes of Hard Rock Cafe and Barnes & Noble. Mondo Bondo is a colorful eatery serving Italian bistro fare. Feast on the delicious Pastrami Reuben. Making a choice becomes easier, as they also have daily specials. For instance, Thursday nights are also known as Pasta Nights. There's no bar as such, but the neat dining room suffices for the hungry. What's more, the prices are quite reasonable. So gorge to your heart's content.

Judging by its name alone, you can tell this little restaurant wants to be liked. Its something-for-everybody menu and first-name-basis friendly staff confirm that desire. And, indeed, it is a likable place. From the Chicken Marsala to the Grilled Chicken in jerk marinade to the great crab cakes, the Italian/Caribbean/Baltimorean menu offers great fare. It's a great looking place as well, with polished hardwood floors and pressed-tin ceilings. And the aforementioned staff is energetically friendly without being overbearing, making this a great lunch destination.

Ask "Who has the best ribs in town?" and the locals are likely to reply: Mount Vernon Stable. There really is something special about the ribs here; indeed, about all the barbecue dishes. The sauce is tangy, smokey, thick and just about perfect. The décor deserves a mention, too. Where else can you find a stuffed boar's head, grinning gargoyles and a real live (and presumably empty) sarcophagus?

In an ideal world, every neighborhood would have a tavern like this. Set in a lovely old two-story home on a quiet tree-lined street, its two wood-paneled bars brim with hospitality, and its two dining rooms, an intimate non-smoking room with bare stone walls and a larger room designed like an indoor gazebo serve first-rate meals. The bars offer a free buffet from 5p-7p weekdays, and the kitchen's seafood specialties, such as Mahi-mahi topped with Lump Crabmeat are both creative and flavorful.

Comfort dining is the catch phrase of this food joint. All kinds of crowds stream in—it was also awarded the Best Lesbian Bar of Baltimore in 2003. You'll find all American, contemporary and innovative cuisine at this eatery. Chill out with friends over pints of beer with the comforting jukebox continuously playing favorite numbers. Else make your way upstairs, for a quiet time with your date. Start with appetizers like Gorgeously Garlic Shrimp and graduate to something like Mix 'n Match, where you get to choose what goes into your pasta. A favorite among patrons, though, is the Baby Back Ribs. Drop by on a Sunday and avail of the likes of carafes of Bloody Mary or mimosa for brunch.

This downtown establishment is distinguished chiefly by the size of its menu. In addition to the typical Vindaloos, Saag and Kebabs, you'll find a fantastic Mulligatawny Soup, a great Salmon Tikka and a Tandoori Lobster that is one of the best seafood entrees in town. Many of these appear on the daily all-you-can-eat buffet, but you'll need to peruse the menu to see everything that is offered. The spacious dining room is modest but inviting, and the atmosphere is very casual.

Canton, located just a few minutes to the Northeast of downtown, is the most recent in a fairly long line of revitalized Baltimore neighborhoods. As such, it has become home to young professionals and urban hipsters. One of the favorite hangouts of this energetic crowd is this small, friendly Mexican restaurant that offers enormous portions of good food at modest prices. The Portabello Mushroom and Spinach Quesadilla is terrific, National Bohemian beer is only USD1 a bottle, and at least a dozen portraits of Elvis grace the walls.

Ask to be seated near the green marble fireplace, and relax as the staff efficiently brings in your order. Redfish Wings, the Seafood Salad and the Fiery Steak should satisfy the growling stomach. Other charmingly rustic choices would be the Clay Pot Lamb, Paella and Jambalaya. The restaurant's private dining room makes for a cozy family dinner, and the banquet room can host a party of 70. A flexible menu is available here, and you can design your own courses with the affable chef, who also takes into account the size of your wallet.

The first floor of the nightclub Redwood Trust is magically transformed into the Red Tapas restaurant for five nights each week. This interesting place in a unique, restored building, boasts of nouveau American cuisine with that exotic Spanish twist. Flamboyant interiors and efficient service lure you within. Following the Spanish tradition of 'tapas' (small plates), the portions here are not for those expecting huge shareable quantities. Choose from innovative dishes like the Espresso-Coated Beef and the Pork-stuffed Steamed Dumplings (with a ponzu glaze and orange cabbage salad). Mellow down with some drinks, while you sway to great jazz at the Tapas Bar and set the pace for the night ahead. It is said that the energetic, stylish atmosphere of the restaurant more than makes up for its unexceptional food. It all depends on what you are here for!

Set in a lovely redbrick rowhouse, this south Baltimore favorite is a great place to grab a beer and a bite. The dark wood interior is comfortable and inviting, whether you choose to sit at the long bar or in the dining room. (There're also café tables outside.) The restaurant offers a full, and very eclectic, menu, but appetizers and bar fare are what the kitchen does best. The satay is delicious, the crab cakes are first rate, and the Jambalaya is chock-full of shrimp, fish and other delights.

If money is no object, this long-time Little Italy favorite is a terrific place to dine. The intimate dining room is decorated with old-school formality, and the tuxedoed wait staff is efficient and professional. Your waiter will happily tell you about the chef's long and ever-changing list of excellent specials. In a city full of great seafood entrees, the swordfish served here simply can't be beat. All the usual Italian dishes are here as well, from Chicken Alfredo to Shrimp Scampi, and the wine list is superb.

Gorgeous flower arrangements, pink pastel drapes, delicate table settings, silver tea and coffee services - this Federal Hill establishment has a jewelry box of a dining room. Add to the décor live musicians playing beautiful melodies on violin and piano, and you have an atmosphere guaranteed to lower your heart rate and raise your spirits. The traditional Russian foods like Borscht and Blinis are as perfectly done and lovely as their surroundings, as are the freshly made desserts. Step in and treat your taste buds to the eclectic creations on the menu: the Barbecued Shrimp is a good way to start, followed by a Steak House Salad. You can hop directly to the entrée section, where filets, T-bones, tuna, lobster and salmon dishes vie with each other, both in terms of taste and popularity. Each menu listing is accompanied by a brief, yet tantalizing description of its contents, which adds to the anticipation. The pleasantly straightforward, starched-linen and fresh-flower atmosphere at this Little Italy landmark lets you know that you're in an old-school restaurant. The menu is full of old favorites - Ravioli and a Veal Parmesan that's truly noteworthy. Even the house specialties, such as the legendary Bookmaker Salad - shrimp, salami and provolone topped with a cheese dressing over crisp iceberg lettuce - has a comfortable familiarity. The chef isn't breaking any new ground here, but then again, why try to improve on the classics?

But the food, delicious Thai staples like Pad Thai, Lemon Grass soup, and a fantastic Chicken Marmasan, really deserve a more luxurious setting. The kitchen here may not be as creative as others in Baltimore's Little Italy, but the dishes (mostly old favorites like Minestrone, Chicken Parmigiana and Saltimbocca) are well prepared, beautifully presented and moderately priced. The name itself tempts prospective patrons to come in and satisfy their curiosity. Here's where one gets all the answers. The city's famed rotisserie chicken restaurant keeps folks busy digging into chunky sandwiches, burritos, salads and of, course - chicken! A variety of desserts provide the sweet aftertaste. All dishes are made from fresh ingredients, including high-quality meats. The restaurant serves signature dishes after 4p daily and delivery is available to nearby locations.

Yellow Bowl Restaurant

For more than 30 years, this friendly, casual eatery has been supplying midtown Baltimore with down-home cooking. Most customers order take-out, but there's a fairly large dining area with comfortable, spacious booths, a loud jukebox and colorful decorations. The menu is posted on the wall behind the counter, and it reads like barbeque's greatest hits. There's Short Ribs, Pork Spare Ribs, Fried Chicken, Mashed Potatoes, Collard Greens, Stewed Cabbage, Candied Sweet Potatoes and Peach Cobbler, among other Southern specialties.

This casually offbeat coffeehouse, in the heart of historic Fells Point, features earnest musicians and racks of paperbacks for the entertainment and edification of its patrons. It also offers 17 espresso drinks and half-a-dozen flavored coffees, all at moderate prices, as well as a broad menu of Eastern European items like Borscht and Pierogies. Many visitors insist the coffeehouse is worth visiting just to have a spoonful of Russian Apple Soup - small bowls of amber heaven.
