This small restaurant, in the heart of the historic waterfront neighborhood of Canton, features display cases filled with a beautiful assortment of Danish, donuts, cakes, pies, pastries and other goodies. Most customers order a sweet treat to go, but some choose to sit at the long lunch counter. Here you can relax with the day's newspaper and a hot cup of coffee or a fresh-made salad, soup or sandwich. Prices are reasonable and the staff is friendly.

This lovely addition to Little Italy's restaurant scene specializes in the traditional cooking of Southern Italy, and a typical meal might include an appetizer of Fried Calamari, followed by the delectable Veal Scaloppine topped with a tasty Cannoli. But simply listing these old favorites doesn't do justice to this jewel of a restaurant, with its tuxedoed waiters, fresh cut roses and intimate dining rooms. The setting is very quiet and very romantic. Jackets are recommended for men.

Style takes precedence at this very classy restaurant, so walk in dressed for a semi-formal dining experience. Let the staff guide you to a table with a beautiful view of the golf course and the pond, and settle in with your choice of wine from the list. Award-winning chefs are busy in the kitchen, preparing some delectable, delightful meals. Order the Tuna Carpaccio or Grilled Tenderloin Salad with Spinach if you are here for lunch. Dinner might be more predictable, with Maryland Crab Cakes, Roasted Rack of Lamb and Pan-seared Salmon among the favorites. The meals come in portions to satisfy the greatest of appetites, and the cuisine matches the standards set by the hotel. This is fine dining indeed!

There's a topiary bicycle outside of this lovely Indian restaurant that perfectly accents the staid elegance you'll find inside. Located just north of the Johns Hopkins University's Homewood Campus, this restaurant's interior features dark paneling and burnished brass. It has a kind of reserved formality that's stylish without being intimidating. The Bengali Swordfish, drizzled with mango sauce is a masterpiece, as is the crab malabar. There's also a courtyard, complete with fountain, for warm weather seating.

This cozy Northeast Baltimore restaurant has occupied the same spot for almost 50 years. The downstairs is an Irish pub, well-stocked with Guinness and Harp. Upstairs, patrons will find a modest dining room specializing in Italian dishes. (Try the Seafood Spaghetti.) So what keeps an Italian/Irish establishment running for half a century in Baltimore? The crab cakes, naturally. The perfectly seasoned, lump-filled patty served here are truly a cut above.

In Baltimore, Bertha's means the blues - and mussels to beat the band. Offered with your choice of eight sauces, Bertha's Mussels are plump, tender, and steamed just right. For years this Fells Point landmark has been giving out green bumper stickers that simply state: "Eat Bertha's Mussels." The rest of the seafood entrees are also very good. They, too, boast fresh ingredients and a sure touch. The décor is warm and funky, the atmosphere lively, and, on weekends, even rowdy.

The Blue crab has always been king of Baltimore's seafood scene, but recently a new generation of restaurants has been challenging the crab's rule. The Black Olive, located in Fells Point, the heart of old Baltimore's maritime district, is perhaps the best. Only the freshest fish are displayed in The Black Olive's case, and guests can choose anything from locally caught Rockfish to more exotic fare. Selections are then grilled to perfection, filleted at tableside and served with the house's amazing Mediterranean-style sauces.

Exquisite Vietnamese cuisine

Baltimore, MD 21201

Set in a wonderfully renovated row home in the picturesque Mount Vernon neighborhood, this modest Vietnamese restaurant is the kind of place food-lovers live for. The walls are exposed brick and the décor is spare and charming, but the modestly priced meals are lavish. Indeed, they are as beautiful as they are delicious. The sesame chicken, for instance, is all glistening earth tones, with a sauce that is savory without being overpowering. The traditional Vietnamese soups are also delightful, featuring flavorful broths with a variety of fresh ingredients.

In a city that has many fine ethnic restaurants, this North Baltimore establishment still manages to stand out. Inside, the atmosphere brings to mind the cool simplicity of an Asian print. The restaurant's beauty extends to its decor, the cuisine also shows an artist's touch. The Gow Bah is a perfect example- it's a well-balanced stew of tender meat and crisp vegetables awash in a delicate sesame sauce. All the dishes served here, including the many vegeterian entrees, show careful attention to detail.

There is an informal tradition among Baltimore waitresses to address customers as 'Hon.' (Pronounced to rhyme with 'bun.') Over the years, the term has come to symbolize the town's casual hospitality, and as such, it suits this friendly café perfectly. Located in Hampden, it has the ambiance of a suburban kitchen circa 1955, and the menu fits the décor just right. Dishes like Four Cheese Lasagna and 'Much Better Than Mom's' Meatloaf are guaranteed to stick to your ribs, and the Crabcake Platter does Baltimore proud.

From soup to sauce, everything at this family-owned Italian favorite is made fresh daily. Add to that its fancy but not too formal decor, its friendly staff and its jovial neighborhood-hangout atmosphere, and you'll see why it's become a midtown institution. All the Italian standbys are well represented here, and their crab cakes are so popular that they actually sell packets of the mix. A terrific example of architectural whimsy, this Fells Point restaurant looks just like an old ship steaming silently up Boston Street bound for the neighborhood of Canton. Inside, however, the spacious and often raucous, dining area and the half-moon bar reveal it for what it is, an old-school restaurant where very good food is served at very reasonable prices. If you're in town visiting someone who lives or works in Charles Village, chances are they know this very friendly, very casual neighborhood pub. It's far from fancy (vinyl booths, small tables, paneled walls dotted with sports pictures), but for a large number of Hopkins students, Charles Village bohemians and local business people, it's a homely place to grab a beer and burger. This fine Fells Point restaurant serves an eclectic mix of Hunan and Szechuan cuisine with an emphasis on seafood, particularly shrimp, crab and lobster. The dishes are imaginatively prepared and flavorful, and there's a general air of sophistication about the place. The dim, almost moody, lighting, combined with the sleek contemporary décor, make the restaurant seem like a movie set. The bar is well stocked and tended, and offers a great variety of Chinese and domestic beers.

This upscale bar and restaurant has been serving Federal Hill's many young urban professionals since the mid-1980s. The food tends mainly toward sandwiches, salads and other comfort foods, but all are prepared with a bit of panache. The hamburger, for instance, is graced with green peppercorn mayonnaise, and the Homemade Chocolate Cake has butterscotch liqueur icing. The atmosphere is friendly and casual, and the space, with its hardwood floors, stained glass windows and wood paneling, has more than a touch of class.
