Juicy burgers and gourmet pizza |
415 West Cold Spring Lane Baltimore, MD 21210 United States +1 410 235 3433 http://www.alonsos.com rkuryk@classiccatering.com |
This Roland Park mainstay has been a local favorite since 1931. For an appetizer, consider Little Neck Clams, Mussles Marinerre or Bruschetta. Then satisfy your craving for a cheeseburger or a thin-crusted pizza topped with roasted vegetables, chicken or shrimp. Sandwiches and calzones are also on the menu, along with a list of wonderful entrees - Grilled Lamb Sirloin, Roast Breast of Free Range Chicken, and a Crab Cake platter. In addition to great food, this restaurant also has great beer menu - 50 bottled beers and six on draft. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Elegant Indian restaurant |
3811 Canterbury Road Baltimore, MD 21218 United States +1 410 366 1484 http://www.ambassadordiningroo... |
There's a topiary bicycle outside of this lovely Indian restaurant that perfectly accents the staid elegance you'll find inside. Located just north of the Johns Hopkins University's Homewood Campus, this restaurant's interior features dark paneling and burnished brass. It has a kind of reserved formality that's stylish without being intimidating. The Bengali Swordfish, drizzled with mango sauce is a masterpiece, as is the crab malabar. There's also a courtyard, complete with fountain, for warm weather seating. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Elegant, sophisticated Italian restaurant |
925 Eastern Avenue Baltimore, MD 21202 United States +1 410 234 1322 http://www.boccaccio-restauran... |
Everything in this Little Italy favorite is done with impeccable taste and sophistication. The formal décor is all polished silver, crisp linen and fresh flowers. The wait staff is quick, knowledgeable and thoroughly professional. The wine list, with an emphasis on northern Italy, is superb. And the food is a delight. The veal chops are amazing: gigantic pieces of tender meat seasoned perfectly with rosemary and a hint of lemon. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Baltimore-style hospitality |
1002 W 36th Street Baltimore, MD 21211 United States +1 410 243 1230 http://www.cafehon.com cafehon@earthlink.net |
There is an informal tradition among Baltimore waitresses to address customers as 'Hon.' (Pronounced to rhyme with 'bun.') Over the years, the term has come to symbolize the town's casual hospitality, and as such, it suits this friendly café perfectly. Located in Hampden, it has the ambiance of a suburban kitchen circa 1955, and the menu fits the décor just right. Dishes like Four Cheese Lasagna and 'Much Better Than Mom's' Meatloaf are guaranteed to stick to your ribs, and the Crabcake Platter does Baltimore proud. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Casual, friendly neighborhood pub |
3107 Saint Paul Street Baltimore, MD 21218-3814 United States +1 410 243 1611 |
If you're in town visiting someone who lives or works in Charles Village, chances are they know this very friendly, very casual neighborhood pub. It's far from fancy (vinyl booths, small tables, paneled walls dotted with sports pictures), but for a large number of Hopkins students, Charles Village bohemians and local business people, it's a homely place to grab a beer and burger. There are about 30 beers available, bottled and on tap, and the sandwiches, salads and other bar-fare items are hearty and modestly priced. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Common likes! |

Common Ground Cafe stands out as one of the best cafes in Baltimore to serve breakfast, lunch and dinner, apart from its baked delights, desserts and coffee. The atmosphere, enhanced with glowing candles and close seating, can easily pass off as romantic - a perfect venue for that first date! You can savor your Osso Buco or Shrimp with Asparagus while lilting tunes fill the air. The desserts are a must try - so don't leave without tasting the freshly prepared fruit pies, muffins and the Bread Pudding - a common favorite! All in all, a great place for an intimate tête-à-tête! Very romantic Italian restaurant |
829 Eastern Avenue Little Italy Baltimore, MD 21202 United States +1 410 539 1965 http://www.dalesios.com/ info@dalesios.com |
One expects Italian restaurants to be romantic, and this Little Italy favorite certainly delivers. Its intimate dinning rooms are candle-lit and filled with fresh flowers, and the outdoor balcony seating is a near perfect setting for romance. But one doesn't always expect an Italian restaurant to be diet-friendly. In this arena too, Dalesio's delivers. The menu features many low-calorie and low-cholesterol entrées, like Grilled Shrimp and Penne Piemontese, which are perfectly healthy, yet still pack enough flavor to be worthy of Little Italy. If you believe in casual dinners, then steer clear of Four West situated at Inn at The Colonnade. This place is classy and elegant. Previously known as the Polo Grill, the restaurant serves up authentic American cuisine. Dig into the Crispy-Seared Rockfish with Lump Crab in Chive-Lemon Sauce, Colorado Lamb Chops or the famous Fried Lobster Tail. Don't forget to keep a little space for the delicious desserts! The breakfasts and brunches are worth a mention too as they cook up some of the most diverse salads, entrees and traditional food. Also choose from their notable wine list. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Popular bar with good food |
919 West 36th Street Baltimore, MD 21211 United States +1 410 662 4914 |
Hampden is one of Baltimore's funkier blue-collar neighborhoods, and this busy establishment is its answer to the chic upscale bars of Federal Hill and Canton. By all accounts it holds up very well. During weeknight happy hours, the place is packed with young urban professionals who amble in for the great drink specials and the excellent bar fare, which includes steaks, hamburgers and seafood dishes. The dimly lit dining room is a bit cavernous, but a large collection of stuffed ducks and vintage photographs give it a homey touch. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Great Maryland cuisine |
10 Art Museum Drive The Baltimore Museum of Art Baltimore, MD 21218 United States +1 410 889 3399 / +1 410 889 9688 http://www.gertrudesbaltimore.com |
Named after the chef's grandmother, this friendly restaurant is located in the Baltimore Museum of Art. The kitchen lavishes attention on the details of each of its Maryland-style seafood dishes, making sure that each is a unique creation. The two types of crab cakes for instance are distinctly different: the Eastern Shore is traditional, made of crabmeat and little else, while the Gertie is a more modern, spicy affair. Enjoy your meal in the chic and homey pastel dining room or on the outdoor patio. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Multiethnic fare and extensive coffee selection |
1105 West 36th Street Baltimore, MD 21211-2410 United States +1 410 889 8891 |
This lovely little cafe on Hampden's Avenue offers an assortment of gourmet coffees, from espresso to latte and capuccino. The multiethnic menu features focaccia sandwiches filled with turkey or roasted vegetables and Vietnamese warm shrimp salad. On weekend mornings, the cafe also offers breakfast favorites, such as Huevos Rancheros or apple pancakes. This cafe is very popular with the locals, particularly on weekends, so be prepared for a pleasant wait. Pass the time on the comfy couch in the quiet backroom. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Great food and great fun |
908 West 36th Street Baltimore, MD 21211-2483 United States +1 410 235 2326 |
In a lot of ways the northwest Baltimore neighborhood of Hampden is like a blue-collar Greenwich Village. There's a decidedly bohemian tint to the place, and it has the art galleries to prove it, but the area also has a down-home side. This tiny establishment (there are 12 tables because 13 wouldn't fit) is a great example. The Burritos, Chiles Rellenos, Tacos and Quesadillas served here show Mexican cooking at its simplest and best. The ingredients are fresh, the prices are low and the portions are mammoth. Seductive sauces top great dishes |
2101 North Charles Street Baltimore, MD 21218 United States +1 410 468 0969 |
Patrons of this cozy restaurant dine at glass-topped tables, charmed by the vibrant Indian prints that adorn the walls. Though the atmosphere is pleasing, it's the smooth sauces that have locals raving. From a creamy spinach sauce to a tomato-based masala, you'll find a variety of seductive spices. Of course, the specialty here is tandoor-oven-cooked meats. Select from chicken, seafood, lamb or beef dishes. The Lamb Saag, topped with a delightful spinach sauce, or the Chicken Tikka, which is served on a sizzling platter, are wonderful choices. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Great Korean barbecue |
18 West 20th Street Baltimore, MD 21218 United States +1 410 837 5231 / +1 410 837 5235 |
The menu at this busy midtown restaurant includes Chinese, Japanese and Korean cuisine. Not satisfied with just the traditional offerings, the chef has also created a few of his own, like the Seafood Pancake, a pizza-sized loaf containing squid, shrimp and scallions. But the specialty here is Korean Barbecue, cooked at your table in a huge, brass-covered pot. The decor is sleek and polished, and the ventilation hoods over the tables give the dining room a very modern look. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Wonderful Ukrainian treats |
2110 North Charles Street Baltimore, MD 21218 United States +1 410 727 7081 |
Set in a tiny rowhouse in Charles Village, this family-run eatery offers traditional American Deli fare, but specializes in Ukrainian and Balkan dishes. Here you'll find Clam Chowder as well as Borscht, Kosher hotdogs as well as Bitockhi (steak) and Blueberry Pie as well as Cake Kiev (a dried fruit and meringue extravaganza). There's also a very nice, inexpensive wine list, and, of course, a great selection of coffee. The décor brings to mind a turn-of-the-century parlor, and the staff is relaxed and friendly. Gourmet Tex-Mex |

This is as good as Tex-Mex gets, so be prepared to wait for a table. And wait. And wait. Reservations are not accepted. The small dining room boasts a desert mural and cactus wall decorations, making the space cheerful. Tables are clustered close together and set with fiesta ware. Start your meal with a cup of Black Bean Soup, adorned with a dollop of sour cream, red salsa and cilantro. For an entree, consider a tasty enchilada or sizzling fajitas, served with all the fixins'. You won't be disappointed. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Located just a little away from Inner Harbor, lies this charming bakery with delicious treats in store. It was created in the memory of the fabulous cook, Miss Shirley, who was famous for her culinary expertise for more than 30 years. How about starting the day with Starbucks coffee, Coconut Cream-stuffed French Toast and German Apple Pancakes? Hmm...sounds tempting! The café serves delicious breakfast and a satisfying choice of salads, soups and sandwiches for lunch. And guess what? The breakfast menu and lunch menu is available the whole day through! Sushi lover's paradise |
2501 North Charles Street Baltimore, MD 21218-4602 United States +1 410 235 4846 |
If you like Asian cuisine, there's bound to be something to delight you at this busy Charles Village restaurant. Here, you'll find a full range of Chinese, Korean and Japanese dishes. Highlights include the Korean barbecue and the reasonably priced buffet, which includes many of the menu's best selections. But the real star here is the sushi. The a-la-carte menu is small, but the pieces are big and the presentation is lovely. The cherry-red carpet notwithstanding, the décor is modest and tasteful. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Great Japanese and Korean cuisine |
3215 N Charles Street Baltimore, MD 21218 United States +1 410 366 4115 |
Located in the charming and centrally located Charles Village neighborhood, this relaxed, casual restaurant serves up first-rate, yet moderately priced, Korean and Japanese cuisine. Take a seat at the sushi bar and feast on fresh tuna, salmon and mackerel, or find a quiet booth and enjoy the delicious hot dishes. The Be Bim Bop—a bowl of rice, mixed vegetables and meat, with a fried egg on top—is comfort food at its best. The understated Asian décor and fresh flowers add to the tranquil atmosphere. Friendly, funky diner |
227 West 29th Street Baltimore, MD 21211 United States +1 410 889 4444 http://www.papermoondiner24.com/ |
This small, somewhat eccentric café is a local favorite. The décor is certainly part of the café's charm- bright primary colors abound, the thrift store furniture is mismatched; mannequins, dolls and other toys decorate the window sills, walls, and even the ceiling. But it's the food that keeps the locals coming back. It's a terrific blend of traditional home cooking and lighter vegetarian fare. The French toast (served all day) is one of the city's treasures.
