Savory dishes, artfully presented
340 North Charles Street
Baltimore, MD 21201
United States
+1 410 727 7971
http://www.banthai.us/
This downtown restaurant has been doing a brisk business since it opened in 1993. One taste of the artfully presented food and you'll understand why. Try the Pad Thai, a delicious blend of noodles, shrimp and peanut sauce. Or, if you're a bit daring, order something served in a spicy curry sauce. If you're in town during the warmer months, be sure to sample the Sweet Rice and Mango, which combines rice with tart-sweet fruit.

Even basic dishes such as Roast Duck and Filet Mignon are done so well as to become truly memorable. And of course, the seafood is impeccable. Add to this a thoroughly professional wait staff, wonderful desserts and an extensive wine list, and it becomes clear why this is the kind of restaurant people come back to time and again.

Great beer and hearty food
1106 N Charles Street

+1 410 547 6925
http://www.thebrewersart.com/i...
This Charles Street establishment, set in an opulent row house just north of downtown, boasts great food and a great bar. The downstairs bar features scores of micro-brews from around the region and the country. It's a grotto-like space, perfect for intimate conversation, and very popular with Baltimore's young professionals. The upstairs restaurant, with its marble fireplaces and raftered ceilings, is cozy and warm, and offers fare that's both hearty and inventive. The Saffron Ravioli should not be missed.

Cafe Viet

Exquisite Vietnamese cuisine
800 North Charles Street
Baltimore, MD 21201
United States
+1 410 332 0332
Set in a wonderfully renovated row home in the picturesque Mount Vernon neighborhood, this modest Vietnamese restaurant is the kind of place food-lovers live for. The walls are exposed brick and the décor is spare and charming, but the modestly priced meals are lavish. Indeed, they are as beautiful as they are delicious. The sesame chicken, for instance, is all glistening earth tones, with a sauce that is savory without being overpowering. The traditional Vietnamese soups are also delightful, featuring flavorful broths with a variety of fresh ingredients.

Calvert House

Friendly neighborhood Italian restaurant
347 North Calvert Street
Baltimore, MD 21202-3611
United States
+1 410 539 3627
From soup to sauce, everything at this family-owned Italian favorite is made fresh daily. Add to that its fancy but not too formal decor, its friendly staff and its jovial neighborhood-hangout atmosphere, and you'll see why it's become a midtown institution. All the Italian standbys are well represented here, and their crab cakes are so popular that they actually sell packets of the mix. Located just minutes from Center Stage, it's a great choice for a pre-curtain meal.

City Cafe

Nouvelle American cafe
1001 Cathedral Street
Baltimore, MD 21201
United States
+1 410 539 4252
http://www.citycafebaltimore.com/
There's an edgy, urban energy to this small eatery, located in the lovely midtown neighborhood of Mount Vernon. The crisp, black and white décor is simple to the point of being severe and the very large front windows provide a good view of the surrounding urban bustle. The inside is generally crowded too, especially the front take-out area. In back, table service, and you'll find some excellent Nouvelle American cuisine. The Southwestern Chicken, grilled with a red pepper glaze, is a real eye-opener.

This small Afghani restaurant in the midtown Mount Vernon neighborhood features an intimate, candle-lit dining room decorated in shades of rose. Traditional Afghani robes adorn the bare brick walls. The food is equally lovely. A typical meal would include the Pureed Pumpkin appetizer, followed by Grilled Chicken with mushrooms in a yogurt and sour cream sauce, and ice cream with mango, figs and dates for dessert. This is four-star dining in a lovely setting, all at affordable prices.

Dishes like Southern Fried Pecan Crusted Chicken and Wasabi Pea Crusted Wild Salmon give American dishes a European and Asian flair. Ixia's cocktail lounge is a popular spot for dinners to lounge for after dinner drinks and dessert.

Kawasaki

Fresh seafood, delightful Japanese cuisine
413 North Charles Street
Baltimore, MD 21202
United States
+1 410 659 7600
http://kawasaki-restaurant.com/
Named after Baltimore's sister city, this is the city's oldest continuously open Japanese restaurant. Paper lanterns and rows of chopsticks in a handsome glass case add an air of authenticity to the decor. For starters, try an intriguing combination of sushi, chef's choice. If you're not willing to leave your palette in the chef's hands, order the smoked salmon or raw tuna rolls. For an entree, consider the vegetarian sushi dinner or the Chicken Katsu, white meat fried to a golden brown. Cash is accepted also.

Mount Vernon Stable and Saloon

Good bar with great ribs
909 North Charles Street
Baltimore, MD 21201
United States
+1 410 685 7427
Ask "Who has the best ribs in town?" and the locals are likely to reply: Mount Vernon Stable. There really is something special about the ribs here; indeed, about all the barbecue dishes. The sauce is tangy, smokey, thick and just about perfect. The décor deserves a mention, too. Where else can you find a stuffed boar's head, grinning gargoyles and a real live (and presumably empty) sarcophagus?

Mt. Vernon Stable & Saloon

For your comfort
909 North Charles Street
Baltimore, MD 21201
United States
+1 410 685 7427
http://www.mvstable.com/
Comfort dining is the catch phrase of this food joint. All kinds of crowds stream in—it was also awarded the Best Lesbian Bar of Baltimore in 2003. You'll find all American, contemporary and innovative cuisine at this eatery. Chill out with friends over pints of beer with the comforting jukebox continuously playing favorite numbers. Else make your way upstairs, for a quiet time with your date. Start with appetizers like Gorgeously Garlic Shrimp and graduate to something like Mix 'n Match, where you get to choose what goes into your pasta. A favorite among patrons, though, is the Baby Back Ribs. Drop by on a Sunday and avail of the likes of carafes of Bloody Mary or mimosa for brunch.

Mughal Garden

Great variety of Indian dishes
920 North Charles Street
Baltimore, MD 21201
United States
+1 410 547 0001
http://www.mughalgarden.com
This downtown establishment is distinguished chiefly by the size of its menu. In addition to the typical Vindaloos, Saag and Kebabs, you'll find a fantastic Mulligatawny Soup, a great Salmon Tikka and a Tandoori Lobster that is one of the best seafood entrees in town. Many of these appear on the daily all-you-can-eat buffet, but you'll need to peruse the menu to see everything that is offered. The spacious dining room is modest but inviting, and the atmosphere is very casual.

This old Owl has been perched up in a quiet corner of Baltimore town since the year 1900! With luminaries and dignitaries having partonized this place for decades, you can rest assured that you will be treated to nothing but the best of everything! Impeccable service and excellent food are the main highlights of this place. The bar displays some of the finest wines and beer, and you can even go in for the local brew, Delaware's Dogfish Head - it goes well with the freshly baked pizzas.

Prime Rib

Baltimore's benchmark steakhouse
1101 North Calvert Street
Baltimore, MD 21202
United States
+1 410 539 1804
http://www.theprimerib.com
For more than 30 years, this downtown restaurant has been Baltimore's benchmark for upscale steakhouses. The signature dish shows why. The Prime Rib Steak is a tender 24-ounce behemoth, a full three inches thick. The rest of the offerings, including several fine seafood dishes, are just as good, if not as weighty. It's hard to believe, but the decor - black walls, gold curtains and leopard-print carpet - is somehow just right. Side dishes are ala Carte, and the wine list is great.

Sascha's 527

Great gourmet lunch spot
527 North Charles Street
Baltimore, MD 21201
United States
+1 410 539 8880
http://www.saschas.com/
The folks at this lovely downtown eatery believe that a quick lunch can still be a satisfying culinary experience. Witness the extensive and creative array of fresh salads, soups, pizzas, noodle dishes and sandwiches. The Grilled Salmon Club delivers more enjoyment than you'd even think to ask from a sandwich. Similarly, the environment is more than you'd expect from a casual lunch-spot. The soothing lemon-yellow walls, high ceilings and comfortable couches are just the ticket for unwinding after a hectic morning. Sascha's also serves dinner.

Sotto Sopra

Fine Italian fare
405 N Charles Street
Baltimore, MD 21201
United States
+1 410 625 0534
http://www.sottosoprainc.com/
This elegant restaurant features floor-to-ceiling murals of cafe scenes and gilded mirrors. The owners redecorated the dining room in the mid-90s; only the cracked tile floor is original. To start, try a half-order of the Gnocchi in red pepper sauce or sample from the Tapas Bar. For a main course, the thin-crusted pizza is a nice choice. Made with homemade sauce and topped with mozzarella, it is a gourmet delight. For dessert, choose from truffles, fresh fruit served with ice cream and Profiteroles with chocolate sauce.

Thairish

Tiny but wonderful Thai cafe
804 North Charles Street
Baltimore, MD 21201-5308
United States
+1 410 752 5857
It's a shame this place is so small. Literally tucked away in a corner of Mount Vernon, it deserves to be much bigger. Not that the management doesn't do the most with the available space. Its four-table dining area is decorated very tastefully, and Thai prints adorn the walls. But the food, delicious Thai staples like Pad Thai, Lemon Grass soup, and a fantastic Chicken Marmasan, really deserve a more luxurious setting. As it is, it makes for a great carryout lunch or dinner option.
