Carrer de Lluis el Piadós 1 Barcelona, Barcelona 08003 |
This church, an old Benedictine monastery, was originally (in 801) a small chapel dedicated to Saint Sadurní. At the end of the 19th century a group of noble virgins moved there to lead a contemplative life and a new chapel was built with a pre-Romanesque porch of which there are still remains. In 945, the then countess of Barcelona had a monastery and a new church built dedicated to the apostle Saint Peter, to unite those maidens under the order of Sant Benet. Destroyed in 985 by troops of Al-Mansur, the church was reconstructed and since 1148 it has been of a marked, definite Romanesque style with later Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque additions. In 1873, the monastery was destroyed and only the current church remains. Review © 2009, Wcities |
