On the west side of Les Rambles (or Las Ramblas in Spanish) you'll find the Raval district, a vibrant mix of museums, art galleries and a notorious red-light area, Barri Xines. There is plenty of cultural variety here, beginning with performers on Las Ramblas, and continuing as you move west past shops and art displays. Once considered unsafe, the Raval is undergoing an urban regeneration and continues to improve and become more visitor-friendly. That being said, tourists would still be wise to store their valuables securely while in the area. The local government, in an attempt to clean up the neighborhood, has demolished many old buildings, widened streets and opened new squares in which people can congregate. The result is an area in which old and new are pleasantly mixed. Review © 2009, Wcities |
