Where you stay will depend on how much you want to pay and which district you want to stay in. There's something for everyone, from youth hostels to luxury five-star hotels.

Budget & Mid-Range Hotels

Cheap youth hostels, with dormitory accommodation, cater for young travelers in the old town. Try the Kabul in the Plaça Reial or the Palau.

Many of Barcelona's pensions offer a bit more privacy than its hostels at a similar price and are located in the old town. The old-fashioned three-star Hotel Suizo is conveniently located for visiting the Barri Gòtic (Gothic Quarter), as is the Hotel Gótico, just by Plaça Sant Jaume.

The four-star Hotel Colón offers a view of the cathedral.

For accommodation on the famous Ramblas, try the attractive Hotel Rivoli Ramblas or the Regina. For somewhere cheaper, but just as good, it's worth booking a room in advance at Hotel Husa Internacional.

Top End & Luxury Hotels

The comfortable hotels in and around Plaça Espanya are ideal for business travellers. The four-star Melià Confort Apolo, on Avenida del Paralelo, Barcelona Plaza, opposite Palau Nacional (National Palace) and Expo Hotel, are just three of the modern hotels close to the business district and trade fair complex. If you take a stroll from Expo Hotel to Plaça d'Espanya along Avenida de Tarragona, you'll see Miró's sculpture, Dona i ocell (Woman with Bird), on your left-hand followed by Arenas de Barcelona bullring, which is no longer used.

The NH hotel chain offers a safe, reliable option if you don't like last-minute surprises. These modern and comfortable hotels include Belagua on busy Via Augusta, Pódium, on Calle Bailén - perfect for business travellers - Numancia, not far from Sants Station and Pedralbesl in the residential district of the same name.

There's no shortage of luxury accommodation to choose from. Try Hotel Princesa Sofía, which boasts a restaurant with panoramic views, Rey Juan Carlos I, at the end of Diagonal, or the Ritz, on Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes. Hotel Majestic on elegant Passeig de Gràcia is a traditional alternative.

Arts Barcelona offers panoramic views across the city to the Mediterranean. Rey Juan Carlos I is set among peaceful private gardens overlooking the city. The Hilton Barcelona offers the luxury and comfort you would expect in the heart of the commercial and business district.

Try the spectacular Art Nouveau Le Meridien, on the Rambla dels Estudis, for something special without the five-star price tag.
