The history of Judaism in Barcelona goes all the way back to the 10th century. The Jewish community lived together in the Jewish district known as the Call, which is now called the Gothic Quarter of Barcelona. After the Call was attacked and consequently destroyed in 1391, Catalan Jewry disappeared. It wasn't until the middle of the 19th century that the Jewish started to establish their communities again in Barcelona. Today, there are two communities in Barcelona, the Israeli Community and the Jewish Community. The latter has its center on the lower floors of a nondescript apartment block, in a small street close to Calle Balmes, in uptown Putxet. Here, apart from having a synagogue, they also organize other activities. Review © 2009, Wcities |
