Tàpies's works and temporary exhibitions
Carrer D'Aragó 255
Barcelona 08007
Spain
+34 93 487 0315
http://www.fundaciotapies.org
The artist himself, Antoni Tàpies, created this center in 1984 as a place to study contemporary art, and today its library has become one of the most important of its kind in the world. It exhibits a large collection of his drawings, paintings, sculptures and engravings and organizes regular temporary exhibitions as well. The building that dates back to 1880, is the work by modernist architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner, and it was the headquarters of the prestigious publishing house, Editorial Muntaner i Simón until the 1970s. Look up, above the entrance to see one of Tàpies's avant-garde sculptures.

This is the only museum in Europe devoted exclusively to Pre-Columbian cultures. Housed in a gothic palace, its collection is one of the finest of its kind and gives visitors an insight into the rich world of the earliest cultures on the American continent. This tiny, intimist museum contains some one hundred pieces, including wood and stone sculptures, ceramics, tapestries, jade, and archaeological ensemble often found in international exhibitions and prestige publications. The collection is structured around the human groups, which inhabited the territory between Mesoamerica and South America before the arrival of the Spanish. The cultures represented include the Olmec, Maya, Aztec, Chavin, Mochica and Inca civilisations. Admission is free on the first Sunday of the month from 10am to 7pm.

Opened in 1994, this is the first center in Europe dedicated to the study of the urban metropolis seen as a universal phenomenon which allows us to analyse the social, cultural and urban development of the city, as well as its history. The C.C.C.B. was built by the architect Piñón y Viaplana, on the site of the old Casa de la Caridad, a beautiful building of which a few original decorative elements remain. This is the main exhibition centre in Barcelona, located in the heart of the Raval district. Apart from courses and seminars, its program includes some of the most interesting cultural initiatives in Barcelona. It also has a café-restaurant and a gift shop.

The club was founded in 1899 and has a long and illustrious history that attracts supporters from all over the world. Apparently, more people come here than to any other attraction in the city, and it's not just the die-hard fans either. You'll get a tour of the stadium and a view from the president's box. There's also an interesting collection of contemporary paintings and sculptures on exhibit.

CaixaForum Museum was created by the distinguished Catalan architect Puig i Cadafalch. It is unusual because its original function was as a textile factory and this adds to the center's utilitarian presence. The CaixaForum's open auditorium holds seminars and cultural events. Past events have been graced by the presence of some international big shots like Bill Clinton, Gorbachev, Bono and Noam Chomsky. Its "Foundations Contemporary Art Collection" is a must—see.

This very famous building is continuously used by professional architects to display their work. It is the murals adorning the front of this building that have made it so famous; they were designed by Picasso in the 50's. Other artists, however, had to carry out the actual painting of the murals since Picasso was not allowed into the country in those days. Inside, there are always interesting temporary exhibitions related to the world of architecture, city planning and contemporary design. Admission: free

This museum's permanent collection describes the city's history from Roman times to the present day. It's located in a beautiful old 16th century mansion with an attractive central courtyard, the casa Clariana-Padellás. The fascinating underground tour takes you along paved Roman roads, through the remains of Roman houses, bathrooms, sewers and up to the old city walls. You can also see historical documents dating from different centuries that illustrate the evolution of the town, including plans, sketches, models and drawings. It's worth visiting the nearby Capella de Santa Àgata on the other side of the Plaça del Rei. The view of the old town's labyrinthine streets from the top of the Torre del Rey Martí is unbeatable..

One section of it has been laid out to give you an overview of the development of sculpture in the Hispanic world from the pre-Roman era to the beginning of the 20th century. The other section is called Gabinete del Coleccionista (Collector's Cupboard) and it's a display of 1000s of 19th-century household objects like fans, pipes and children's dolls arranged according to Marés's own taste to give the public a picture of everyday life in that period. You'll find it conveniently located next to the Catedral. In summer, there's a nice outdoor cafe here.

You'll see scale models of Montseny Nature Reserve (in Barcelona province) and the volcanic area of La Garrotxa (in Girona province). There's also an interesting collection of minerals and palaeontology that includes fossilized plants and animals more than 120 million years old from Spain and other parts of Europe. A grand edifice houses perhaps the largest cultural resource in Catalonia, with the richest selection of programs for the public. The center sponsors political debates of local and national politicians, book readings, film screenings, art shows, concerts, and more. L'Ateneu is located inside El Palau Savassona, the old residence of Josep Francesc Ferrer de Llupià Brossa, a former Baron of Savassona. Even if you're not planning to attend one of the cultural events, it's worth it to visit the building, as it's an equally-dignified neoclassical contrast to the famous Gaudi-inspired architecture that dominates much of modern Barcelona.

This cultural centre is located in the old Casa Macaya, built by the prestigious modernist architect, Puig i Cadafalch, in 1901. It really is a magnificent modernist building, the Gothic style combined with Arabic influences resulted in one of the most curious and original buildings in Barcelona. Both national and international artists show paintings, photographs, sculptures and ceramics in alternating exhibitions here. They also frequently do exhibitions on the most primitive and remote cultures of this planet. In addition, they have a varied programme of activities, including conferences, seminars, workshops, concerts, and activities for children.

All about the great Gaudí
Carrer de Provença 261-265
Barcelona 08008

Antoni Gaudí's La Pedrera is probably the most famous work of Catalan Modernist architecture. Start your tour at the top, in the Espai Gaudí, where you'll find models and video films that show and explain all his buildings. From here, you can also get to the interesting roof-top terrace with its excellent views of the Eixample between the phantasmagoric army of chimneys and ventilation tubes. In summer, there are outdoor jazz concerts up on the roof. Your next stop should be El Pis de la Pedrera, a faithful reproduction of one of the block's original apartments that's designed to give you an idea of how the middle-classes lived here at the turn of the 20th century. Finally, visit the main floor and its temporary exhibitions.

This maritime museum describes the history of the Catalan fleet through exhibitions of old sailing ships, paintings, figureheads, navigational instruments, maps and charts. There are two permanent exhibitions and educational activities for children, who can physically board both Don Juan de Austria's royal galleon and Narcís Monturiol's primitive submarine. The museum is housed in the Reials Drassanes, a typical 13th century Catalan Gothic construction built on the orders of King Pere el Gran as a boat repair yard at a time when the Catalan fleet controlled many of the Mediterranean's important trade routes.

Created in order to preserve, exhibit and disseminate the history of Catalunya, it's located in an old warehouse in the port, dating from 1900 and renovated in 1996 to house this museum. It's a dynamic, interactive and contemporary cultural centre where history is brought to life through artefacts, documents, historical re-creations, film, video, sound and computer programmes. Children will love the room with a topographic model of Catalunya under their feet. There are regular temporary exhibitions, an historical archive, an audiovisual library, a conventional library and an educational department. The cafe offers wonderful views over the port and the shop sells books and souvenirs. On Wednesday nights in summer, you can come on a guided tour that ends up with some typical Catalan hospitality - coca (flat sponge cake) and cremat (a hot drink that contains rum, coffee, lemon peel and sugar) on the terrace.

Templo Expiatorio of the Sagrada Família is the unfinished and most expensive project by Antoni Gaudí, the great architect. This unique exhibit includes plans, drawings, photographs and models related to the construction of the temple, and pieces made from wrought iron, bronze and wood as well. Visitors can also see how the temple was devised and its origins. The museum is located in the crypt of the basilica and you enter from the side of the Passió façade (Carrer Sardenya). There is also a lift that takes visitors to one of the towers, from which there is an excellent view over this unfinished though magnificent construction.

This museum is located opposite the Picasso Museum, in the medieval Marqueses de Lió Palace, well known because of its original wooden roof and ornate central courtyard (still beautifully preserved). The museum is divided into three sections: textiles, clothes and lace. It gives visitors the chance to trace the history of fabrics and fashion from Ancient Egypt up to the present day. Moreover, it includes a collection of mannequins, textile tools, carpets, embroidered pieces and liturgical ornaments, among other items. There is also a terrace-bar all year round that is one of the most pleasant spots in Barcelona. Furthermore, there is a nice shop where they sell any kind of fabric and clothes made from natural materials and fibres. During school holidays, they organize workshops through which children can learn, for example, how to weave a tapestry and take it home afterward.

The museum café, El Bosc de les Fades, is an enchanted forest where you can have a drink and calm down after your visit. Admision: EUR7:50 (adults), EUR4:50 (children 5-11).

This museum's permanent collection displays the diversity of the animal kingdom, with sections dedicated to birds, mammals and cave-dwelling insects. The educational activities instruct children how to identify animals by their pawprints, birds by their different songs and explain the multiple uses of beeswax. You'll find the museum in Lluís Domènech i Montaner's modernist construction, the Castell dels Tres Dragons, that was first used as a bar and restaurant during the Barcelona's 1888 World Fair.
