OIdest Spanish Synagogue |
Marlet 5 Barcelona 08006 +34 93 317 0790 http://www.calldebarcelona.org/esina.html |
The Sinagoga Mayor was discovered only in 1995, based on the notes of medieval historian Jaume Riera. It is however the oldest synagogue in Spain and perhaps even in Europe. Long forgotten since 1391, when there was a major attack on the Jewish quarter, it has recently been restored and can be visited for free. The synagogue is southeast facing, faithfully pointing to Jerusalem. Excavations have unearthed 1st century Roman walls made of stones from Carthage. To think this place was almost converted into a bar! Review © 2009, Wcities |
