This theatre is located on the site of Barcelona's first theatre, Teatre de la Santa Creu, which opened in 1596 and began holding regular opera seasons in 1750. After a fire in 1788, it was rebuilt and took the name of Teatre Principal, putting on plays in Catalan. It has recently reopened, with the latest technology, following a period of closure, and has 800 seats. The theatre has put on various kinds of shows, including Broadway hits produced in Cataluña, featuring Spanish actors, singers and dancers.
