This state park, a former landfill, is being transformed into a recreational wonderland by a number of public agencies. Eventually, it will consist of 1,817 acres and span the shorelines of Albany, Richmond, El Cerrito and Emeryville. Until then, the park is open to the public and provides awesome views of the San Francisco Bay. This scenic spot in the making features a park, marina and trails along the shoreline.

Join the throngs for a fantastic half-hour long fireworks display over the waters of the Marina, where the bridges and skyline of San Francisco make a spectacular backdrop. In addition to the pyrotechnics in the evening, the Marina hosts a day-long gathering where you can picnic on the green, barbecue at one of the many pits, or just hang out with the crowds. Some food vendors and craftspeople peddle their goods, and the surrounding streets are closed, so walk or take public transit. Bring a sweatshirt for a possibly chilly evening, Hackysacks and Frisbees. Admission is free. Some vendors may accept credit cards.

Started in 1996 and modeled after Pasadena's world famous Do-Dah Parade, the How Berkeley Can You Be parade and festival celebrates quirkiness, irreverence, and cultural and ethnic diversity all in one. Be prepared for any and everything: cars decorated like animals, giant meatballs walking down the street, naked people, clowns, and anything else limited only by the imagination of the locals. The parade ends at Civic Center Park where a day-long festival ensues with arts, crafts, music, food, mimes, dance, and a lively atmosphere unlike any you have ever experienced. Admission is free; some vendors may take credit cards.

Telegraph Avenue

Berkeley
United States
Telegraph Avenue, for three generations the engine of Berkeley's militant counterculture, is a vibrant, living anthropological museum. Still-angry radicals draft leftist tracts in the Caffe Mediterraneum. Aging hippies sell tie-dye and macramé from sidewalk tables next to Rastas offering knit tam o'shanters and hemp advocates hawking bumper stickers. Knots of disaffected young punks in black leather set up camp on the curb. The inevitable "Berkeley Crazy" floats through the crowd, talking animatedly to unseen companions. For the thousands of undergraduates who do their business on "The Avenue," however, it's all just background (or foreground) to the eateries, record barns, clothing outlets and bookstores lining the four blocks between Bancroft and Dwight.
