Californication |
2700, Bancroft Way Westminster House Berkeley, CA 94704 United States +1 510 647 2300 http://www.adagiarestaurant.com/ |
Originally the great dining room of the Westminster House, Adagia keeps its tradition of "community" alive. Sprinkled with loads of sunlight and light wooden interiors, this banquet style restaurant is a relaxed place to sample Californian cuisine made with fresh local produce...and check out the local crowd too! Outdoor dining allows you to enjoy the famous Californian sunshine. While the food is more wholesome than exciting and the service can be a bit slow, the ambiance is the main draw. Peace, quiet, caffeine |
2000 University Ave Berkeley, CA 94704 United States +1 510 845 0433 |
A long time favorite of students in search of the perfect place to study, it is a haven for those looking for a wooden-tabled coffee house that is open late and does not get too raucous. Despite its roomy interior, the dark wood and rustle of lecture notes will put you at peace and allow you to hunker down with a mocha and focus on that 19th-century tome. In addition to the many caffeinated choices and standard pastries, it also offers soups and sandwiches throughout the day, and a selection of gourmet desserts. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Since 1988, this little bakery has been baking up some of the best cookies, pies, cakes and pastries in the downtown area. The owners use only the freshest ingredients, and bake every day the old-fashioned way. Relax at one of the tables with a warm cup of joe. There are also a few tables outside. Cakes include Apricot-Hazelnut Chocolate Velvet, and both Devil's and Angel's Food Cake. The breakfast pastries are fresh every morning. Its pies are made with hand-rolled butter crust and seasonal fruits like strawberry and rhubarb. You can also find lemon meringue and bourbon pecan pies year-round. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This favorite serves up a wide variety of hamburgers. It also has more than a dozen chicken, turkey and tofu selections, and ten different salads including Thai Chicken. The atmosphere is fun and casual with mod posters on the wall and friendly servers. The burgers are huge, as are the baskets of fries and onion rings, and the shakes thick and old fashioned. The burgers include the basic, the Popeye (fresh spinach) and the Louisiana Blackened. The chicken, turkey and tofu burgers include Teriyaki and Maui Waui. You can add extras like pesto, homemade salsa, guacamole and sauteed mushrooms. More serious vegetarians can try the Portabello Burgers. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Diner chic on Fourth Street |
1807-A Fourth Street Berkeley, CA 94710 United States +1 510 644 3230 |
The name's a bit misleading. Not only is there no ocean view, but this is not your ordinary diner. Though it has streamlined aluminum and black-and-white tile, and the fare is inspired by diner cuisine, the ingredients are the freshest available and the dishes are prepared with care and imagination. At breakfast, the cooks do wonderful things with the humble buttermilk pancake, and the scrambled eggs and tortilla chips are memorable, as well. At lunch, it is sandwiches and plate specials, which often feature a fresh fish filet. The to-go counter next door, offers sandwiches and mini-pizzas. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Brews and food |
2367 Telegraph Ave Berkeley, CA 94704 United States +1 877 488 6533 |
Since 1940, Blake's has been a fixture of Telegraph Avenue. Starting as a joint for beer and a quick bite by Larry Blake, it evolved into a jazz club, then a blues venue as well as a casual restaurant serving a mix of tasty bar food with some surprisingly good variations, all very reasonably priced. It serves food at all hours, has a full bar and dining section on the main floor, a bar and performance stage downstairs, and a third service bar and lounge area on the third floor. It offers approximately 15 imported, domestic and microbrew beers on tap, as well as an ample stock of fine wine and premium liquor. Choose from pizzas, burgers, sandwiches, salad, pastas and wraps that are reasonably filling and affordably priced. Performers at Blake's have included the likes of Otis Rush, Etta James, Boz Skaggs and Greg Allman; it also now books alternative sounds like Third Eye Blind. On any given night you may hear ska, funk, jazz, rock or world music. Blake's is the second destination of the Raleigh's-Blake's-Kip's-Bear's Lair Cal Berkeley college bar crawl; expect a predominantly student crowd most nights. Review © 2007, Wcities |

For years this place been cranking out fresh, hot slices loaded with cheese, generous toppings and a substantial crust. Modeled after the famous grab-and-go pizzerias of New York, it holds its own nicely against them. The inside has a few lean-on bars upon which you can eat, but most grab a slice and hit the Avenue. Slice prices vary depending on what you order, but you can also order whole pies with all the usual toppings like veggies, pepperoni or sausage. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Since 1968, this restaurant has been serving chic and delicious burgers, bacon and baklava on the cheap. A cut above a greasy spoon or a fast food joint, it has a sleek, yellow and blue decor, comfy seats and apparent gloss. It serves breakfasts, like omelets with cheese, mushroom, bacon, or sausage, or eggs any style. Also find sandwiches with a decidedly Middle Eastern flair like the Shish Kebab Sandwich. Vegetarian selections include falafel and hummus sandwiches. But really, you are here for the burgers, which are big, cheap and juicy. Try the All-American and the Bacon. Find a high ceiling and wall murals that lend an Italian countryside feel. The windows looking out onto the street are large, so you can watch the foot traffic go by. Few restaurants are known worldwide. Welcome to the jewel in Berkeley's culinary crown, the restaurant around which the famous Gourmet Ghetto has grown. Alice Waters opened this restaurant in 1971 in the hopes of marrying the best in international culinary skills with locally produced organic ingredients, all in the atmosphere of a friendly dinner party. She has more than succeeded. In this intimate setting of brick and wood, an upstairs cafe was opened to offer the delights and flavors of Chez Panisse with a more casual setting and more casual prices. The menu changes daily, but an example of dinner includes Oyster Bisque with Tomales Bay Oysters and Herb Croutons, Oregon Steelhead with Rose Butter, and Apple Jalousie Tart with Candied Orange Ice Cream. The wine list is extensive, featuring dozens and dozens of wines from almost as many countries. Bottles run from USD22 to several hundred. Review © 2007, Wcities |

It features greens, blacks and oolongs from China, Korea and Japan, as well as several herbals from the Middle East and North Africa, everything from the delicate Dragon Well to the feisty Purple Bamboo. It also sells a variety of handcrafted teapots and bowls from the East, including genuine Yi Zhing pots. Buy in bulk, or enjoy a steaming pot upstairs at one of the tables or on a tatami mat. Meatlover's paradise |

For meat lovers, this little red shack is a shaque d'amour, where you will enjoy the tenderest brisket around, bonesucking ribs, and for liberal vegetarians, a barbecued chicken unlike any you have ever had. Choose whether you would like your sauce mild, medium or hot (no, the staff will not tell you the secret ingredients), and watch your meat cooked to perfection before your eyes in the pit. The late hours, particularly on weekends, make this a popular destination. Soft drinks, water, and simple sides are available, but if you are here, you are here for meat. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A recipient of the Northern California Best Places award for several years, this restaurant features chef/owner Philip Chu's Burmese menu, reflect many regional influences: Chinese, Thai, Vietnamese and even Indian. If you love garlic or curry, this is your spot. The decor is very clean, bright and somewhat 80s. (Is that neon? Are those geometric shapes on the walls?) The appetizers include traditional Burmese (Fried Tropical Squash), Indian (Samosas) and Chinese (Eight Treasure Bean Curd). Noodle entrees include Garlic Noodles and Prawns. Curries feature fish, lamb and several vegetarian options like Stir-Fried Jicama, Cloud Ears, Mushrooms and Snow Peas. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Superb Italian Cuisine |
5655 College Avenue Berkeley, CA 94618 United States +1 510 547 5356 http://www.oliveto.com |
Chef Paul Bertolli's magical use of local, seasonal products has created the type of highbrow Italian menu that reportedly causes sound-minded adults to fall to their knees and weep openly from the taste bud euphoria. So as to assure absolute freshness the menu changes daily. Past entrees have included spit-roasted lamb (USD30) and roasted northern halibut (USD30). The wine menu rates as superb. For a more casual atmosphere, opt for the restaurant's adjoining café. Reservations are strongly suggested. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Part of the well-known Bay Area chain of restaurants, this hip and stylish restaurant serves up tasty homemade pastas and delectable seafood and meat dishes at decent prices in a hip setting. Try the Frutti Di Mare with its generous helping of shellfish. Caribbean Cuisine Carefully Cooked |
2836 Sacramento Street Berkeley, CA 94710 United States +1 510 486 1202 |
Penny's Caribbean Cafe is not in Berkeley's finest neighborhood, but it is not a restaurant for those interested in luxury. Penny's is for those interested in great food. Operated only by the lovable Penny herself, this cafe caters to anyone looking for a relaxing, yet amazing meal. All food is cooked from scratch, so it takes slightly longer to get a dish than at an average restaurant (you're on island time at Penny's), but after tasting the Goat Roti or the Mango Bread, the wait will have been worth it. Wash it all down with some Ginger Beer and your taste buds will be singing for more. A word to the brave, though, the hot sauce puts its name to the test. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Although the neon, plastic and yellow accents of this pizzeria make it seem like a dive for pepperoni and cheese, it is anything but. This restaurant serves up both traditional and creative variations. You will find nicely stuffed calzones, filling lasagna, salads and antipasto. But go for the pizza. Pick a size (from 12 to 18 inches) and then choose one of the many tempting pies. Try the Rockridgian with its fresh tomatatoes, basil, garlic, ricotta and mozzarella, or the Kitchen Sink. A Berkeley Keystone |
2438 Telegraph Avenue Berkeley, CA 94704 United States +1 510 848 8652 |
If you're a Cal Berkeley graduate, you are well acquainted with Raleigh's. Raleigh's is the first cornerstone of the Raleigh's-Kip's-Blake's-Bear's Lair college bar foursome-- the crawl that encompasses many a Cal Bear student's nightlife. On Thursday nights and weekends, expect a healthy Berkeley student crowd jam packed into the charismatic and tradtion-filled atmosphere. And if Cal is playing football or basketball, expect standing room only. Beware not to wear red though (the hated color of that other 'university' down the peninsula), or you may have a crowd chanting, "Take it off!" Raleigh's has a great outdoor patio and deck in the back with many tables to accomodate large crowds, and is ideal for hanging out with friends. It also features a great beer selection, pool tables, and a shuffleboard table. Since it closes earlier than most bars (12 midnight), crowds usually start here before heading elswhere latenight. Come to Raleigh's for lunch and dinner, and choose from a tasty if yet typical american pub menu. Placed squarely in the campus section of the famed Telegraph Avenue, near People's Park, Raleigh's is a can't miss when visiting the city of Berkeley. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Tuscany on College Avenue |

Looking for a bit of Northern Italian cuisine in the Elmwood district? Come here. Little touches lend an air of Tuscan romance, like the imported wines, risottos, garlic, mushrooms and oils in the window. The statuary and artwork, the murals on the rustic walls and the hearty setting of an off-the-beaten-path trattoria will transport you from the craziness of Berkeley. Being northern Italian, the cuisine favors robust gnocchi, polenta and risotto over pasta. Try the Ravioli Rustica, the Polpette with Gnocchi or one of the many Pizzas like the Napoletana, Gorganzola or the Calzone of the day. Only cash is accepted. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Located in a section of Berkeley burgeoning with new shops and eateries, Sea Salt Restaurant shows the variety of delectable dishes that can come solely from the ocean. Created by the same owners as Lalime, Fonda, and Jimmy Bean's, this restaurant offers a level of creativity and sustainability in their food that makes them a culinary force to be reckoned with in the East Bay. And with few options for non-seafood fans, the menu encourages visitors to venture out of their regular meat-centered dishes. The menu proves that there is a sea teeming with alternative, delicious dishes like the Steamed Lobster on a Torpedo Roll. Barbecue without the Bib |

In the laid back academic town of Berkeley, California there are few things that bring about competition like food. Every major street is dotted with unique restaurants showcasing cuisines from through out the world, as well as those that fuse exotic tastes together and make them palatable for common American taste buds. Of all the competition there is one that truly embodies Berkeley's passion for exciting food, that is Gilman Street's T-Rex Barbecue. Founded in 2005 by long time Bay Area Restaurateur Haig Krikorian, T-Rex has taken a modern stance on the classic barbecue joint and turned it into a sit-down restaurant that screams of class. Aside of the beautiful autumn hues and polished steel that line the interior, the main attraction is definitely the large portions of smoked meats and sides that are served daily. Local favorites include the massive long cut beef short rib or the classic baby back ribs, which are commonly paired with one of their interesting takes on standard sides like potato salad, macaroni and cheese, and corn bread. They also serve a wide array of custom cocktails, and beer cocktails that will surely compliment an entree. Whether it be for brunch, lunch, dinner, or just a drink and a light, ok, large snack, stop into T-Rex for delicious barbecue with Bay Area style. Review © 2007, Wcities |

It also serves an array of sandwiches and burgers, and occasionally special entrees in the afternoon like meatloaf, pasta and chicken. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Inside this nondescript, all-vegetarian Chinese restaurant, you will find an informal yet comfortable setting with daily specials tacked up on the blue walls, and some traditional lanterns and statuary. The owner strongly believes in the health benefits of a vegetarian diet (as the news clippings posted to the door will attest) and in having everything fresh and bursting with seasonal goodness. Try vegetarian variations on old favorites, including Chow Mein, Lo Mein and combinations like the Black Mushroom and Greens or Braised Eggplant. For those who miss the texture of meat, there are many dishes made with bean gluten. Cash only. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Within a grand hall-like atmosphere with dozens and dozens of tables, and beautiful traditional art on the walls, waft the smells of tandoori and curry and naan. The delights of both Northern and Southern cuisine are made fresh from the kitchen, and are different every day but usually include a variety of meat and vegetable samosas and pakoras. There are also tandoori dishes, and a variety of kormas, saags, masalas and vindaloos with chicken, lamb and fish. And for a few dollars more includes dal, soup, breads and dessert. It goes down well with Indian beer. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Indian snack warehouse |
724 Allston Way Berkeley, CA 94710 United States +1 510 644 4412 |
Chaat, the Hindi word for snacks, are the stock-in-trade of this bright blue warehouse on Berkeley's industrial West Side. Every day, two dozen varieties of chaat are chalked up on the whiteboard, tasty little morsels ranging from Vadu and Chole to Pakoras and Samosas. The eatery has been discovered, big time, but the counter service is fast enough to handle the big lunchtime crowds. Insider's tip: on weekends, order the Masala Dosas, huge lentil pancakes with spiced potato fillings in a thin lentil soup. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Known to the locals as the Thai Temple, an eccentric array of Thai cuisine — Mango with Sweet Rice and Spicy Green Beans with Tofu, to name a few. Top Tavern in Town |

Located in the heart of the chic Rockridge area, Wood Tavern is arguably the East Bay' favorite new bar and restaurant. Saying that they have pretty good dishes is like suggesting that Michael Jordan had a better than average jump-shot. Off the lunch menu, treat yourself with a pastrami sandwich. As for dinner, you can't go wrong with the smoked duck breast or the pan roasted chicken. While the restaurant tends to crowd up, especially during peak hours, an airy breeze(when weather permits)and a friendly staff help to cultivate a casual atmosphere. Equipped with a full cocktail menu and over 70 wines, you can even stop in just for an after-work drink and leave satisfied. Review © 2007, Wcities |
