Californication |
2700, Bancroft Way Westminster House Berkeley, CA 94704 United States +1 510 647 2300 http://www.adagiarestaurant.com/ info@adagiarestaurant.com |
Originally the great dining room of the Westminster House, Adagia keeps its tradition of "community" alive. Sprinkled with loads of sunlight and light wooden interiors, this banquet style restaurant is a relaxed place to sample Californian cuisine made with fresh local produce...and check out the local crowd too! Outdoor dining allows you to enjoy the famous Californian sunshine. While the food is more wholesome than exciting and the service can be a bit slow, the ambiance is the main draw. Since 1988, this little bakery has been baking up some of the best cookies, pies, cakes and pastries in the downtown area. The owners use only the freshest ingredients, and bake every day the old-fashioned way. Relax at one of the tables with a warm cup of joe. There are also a few tables outside. Cakes include Apricot-Hazelnut Chocolate Velvet, and both Devil's and Angel's Food Cake. The breakfast pastries are fresh every morning. Its pies are made with hand-rolled butter crust and seasonal fruits like strawberry and rhubarb. You can also find lemon meringue and bourbon pecan pies year-round. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This favorite serves up a wide variety of hamburgers. It also has more than a dozen chicken, turkey and tofu selections, and ten different salads including Thai Chicken. The atmosphere is fun and casual with mod posters on the wall and friendly servers. The burgers are huge, as are the baskets of fries and onion rings, and the shakes thick and old fashioned. The burgers include the basic, the Popeye (fresh spinach) and the Louisiana Blackened. The chicken, turkey and tofu burgers include Teriyaki and Maui Waui. You can add extras like pesto, homemade salsa, guacamole and sauteed mushrooms. More serious vegetarians can try the Portabello Burgers. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Diner chic on Fourth Street |
1807-A Fourth Street Berkeley, CA 94710 United States +1 510 644 3230 |
The name's a bit misleading. Not only is there no ocean view, but this is not your ordinary diner. Though it has streamlined aluminum and black-and-white tile, and the fare is inspired by diner cuisine, the ingredients are the freshest available and the dishes are prepared with care and imagination. At breakfast, the cooks do wonderful things with the humble buttermilk pancake, and the scrambled eggs and tortilla chips are memorable, as well. At lunch, it is sandwiches and plate specials, which often feature a fresh fish filet. The to-go counter next door, offers sandwiches and mini-pizzas. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Brews and food |
2367 Telegraph Ave Berkeley, CA 94704 United States +1 877 488 6533 blakes@slip.net |
Since 1940, Blake's has been a fixture of Telegraph Avenue. Starting as a joint for beer and a quick bite by Larry Blake, it evolved into a jazz club, then a blues venue as well as a casual restaurant serving a mix of tasty bar food with some surprisingly good variations, all very reasonably priced. It serves food at all hours, has a full bar and dining section on the main floor, a bar and performance stage downstairs, and a third service bar and lounge area on the third floor. It offers approximately 15 imported, domestic and microbrew beers on tap, as well as an ample stock of fine wine and premium liquor. Choose from pizzas, burgers, sandwiches, salad, pastas and wraps that are reasonably filling and affordably priced. Performers at Blake's have included the likes of Otis Rush, Etta James, Boz Skaggs and Greg Allman; it also now books alternative sounds like Third Eye Blind. On any given night you may hear ska, funk, jazz, rock or world music. Blake's is the second destination of the Raleigh's-Blake's-Kip's-Bear's Lair Cal Berkeley college bar crawl; expect a predominantly student crowd most nights. Review © 2007, Wcities |

2340 Telegraph Avenue Berkeley, CA 94704 United States +1 510 548 1129 |
For years this place been cranking out fresh, hot slices loaded with cheese, generous toppings and a substantial crust. Modeled after the famous grab-and-go pizzerias of New York, it holds its own nicely against them. The inside has a few lean-on bars upon which you can eat, but most grab a slice and hit the Avenue. Slice prices vary depending on what you order, but you can also order whole pies with all the usual toppings like veggies, pepperoni or sausage. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Drummin' up great burgers |
2154 Center Street Berkeley, CA 94704 United States +1 510 548 7700 |
Since 1968, this restaurant has been serving chic and delicious burgers, bacon and baklava on the cheap. A cut above a greasy spoon or a fast food joint, it has a sleek, yellow and blue decor, comfy seats and apparent gloss. It serves breakfasts, like omelets with cheese, mushroom, bacon, or sausage, or eggs any style. Also find sandwiches with a decidedly Middle Eastern flair like the Shish Kebab Sandwich. Vegetarian selections include falafel and hummus sandwiches. But really, you are here for the burgers, which are big, cheap and juicy. Try the All-American and the Bacon. Everything is grilled and made to order. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Find a high ceiling and wall murals that lend an Italian countryside feel. The windows looking out onto the street are large, so you can watch the foot traffic go by. The salads (chef, green or veggie) are easily sharable by two or three people. They are made with the freshest of ingredients and come with the house's homemade honey wheat bread. Sandwiches like roast beef, turkey, ham and vegetarian, are equally as sharable as the salads. Try the robust and strong Indo Noir or the heady Moka Java coffee with a fresh pastry. Cafe Rouge, located in the heart of Berkeley's hoppin' 4th Street shopping district, is an East Bay institution. Foodies flock from far and wide for treats as simple as a cheeseburger and as complex as a Mediterranean-style lamb shank entree. Menu items are rotated in and out of circulation every couple weeks, so expect to see new and exciting things every time you visit. Shellfish fans marvel at the massive oyster selection (officially celebrated at the weekly Oyster Wednesday party). Cafe Rouge is also well known for the quality of its meats, all of which come from the finest local and regional producers, and many of which are available for takeaway at the on-site Meat Market (where you'll also find all manner of cured meats, pates, terrines and sausages). Few restaurants are known worldwide. Welcome to the jewel in Berkeley's culinary crown, the restaurant around which the famous Gourmet Ghetto has grown. Alice Waters opened this restaurant in 1971 in the hopes of marrying the best in international culinary skills with locally produced organic ingredients, all in the atmosphere of a friendly dinner party. She has more than succeeded. In this intimate setting of brick and wood, an upstairs cafe was opened to offer the delights and flavors of Chez Panisse with a more casual setting and more casual prices. The menu changes daily, but an example of dinner includes Oyster Bisque with Tomales Bay Oysters and Herb Croutons, Oregon Steelhead with Rose Butter, and Apple Jalousie Tart with Candied Orange Ice Cream. The wine list is extensive, featuring dozens and dozens of wines from almost as many countries. Bottles run from USD22 to several hundred. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Citron is a world of subtle yellow accents and brilliant food. Art Deco glass sconces adorn the yellow walls, with black and white prints that break up the monotony. The menu is a fusion of seafood and local ingredients, with styles that range from Spanish, French, Italian and American, making this place very Californian indeed. Try the Paella Citron with its generous shrimp and shellfish and perfectly spiced rice. Small plates include the Warm Artichoke Confit. For meat lovers, this little red shack is a shaque d'amour, where you will enjoy the tenderest brisket around, bonesucking ribs, and for liberal vegetarians, a barbecued chicken unlike any you have ever had. Choose whether you would like your sauce mild, medium or hot (no, the staff will not tell you the secret ingredients), and watch your meat cooked to perfection before your eyes in the pit. Essential breakfast diner |

This spacious, diner-style dining room has green marble tabletops, high ceilings and hanging plants. You will always find parking in the restaurant's own parking lot. The kitchen prepares a variety of dishes, from low-calorie treats to sinful entrees. The breakfast portion of the menu is the highlight; however, the lunch menu is also a strong contender with homemade soups and grilled chicken sandwiches. But the shining stars are the delicious egg dishes dripping in Hollandaise Sauce. At this East Bay beer and pizza joint, located on San Pablo Avenue in Berkeley, patrons can feast on thin and crispy slices while momentarily evading the bustle of the noisy neighborhood intersection outside. Begin your meal with a big salad full of fresh veggies and topped with your choice of house-made dressings. The pies here are strictly New York-style (some with names like "Carnivore," "Garbage Pie" and the cult classic, "Heartstopper" with bacon and Gorgonzola), and regulars will attest that Lanesplitter does it right. Plenty of tables and a ton of barstools mean there's almost always a spot for you, and there's even a charming patio out back complete with heat lamps and picnic tables. On the stereo: rock 'n' roll. On the walls: a rotating collection of locally produced artwork. On tap: a rotating selection of more than a dozen locally produced microbrews (including Russian River Brewing Company's Damnation, a favorite of regulars). See website for menu and more. A Berkeley Keystone |
2438 Telegraph Avenue Berkeley, CA 94704 United States +1 510 848 8652 |
If you're a Cal Berkeley graduate, you are well acquainted with Raleigh's. Raleigh's is the first cornerstone of the Raleigh's-Kip's-Blake's-Bear's Lair college bar foursome-- the crawl that encompasses many a Cal Bear student's nightlife. On Thursday nights and weekends, expect a healthy Berkeley student crowd jam packed into the charismatic and tradtion-filled atmosphere. And if Cal is playing football or basketball, expect standing room only. Beware not to wear red though (the hated color of that other 'university' down the peninsula), or you may have a crowd chanting, "Take it off!" Raleigh's has a great outdoor patio and deck in the back with many tables to accomodate large crowds, and is ideal for hanging out with friends. It also features a great beer selection, pool tables, and a shuffleboard table. Since it closes earlier than most bars (12 midnight), crowds usually start here before heading elswhere latenight. Come to Raleigh's for lunch and dinner, and choose from a tasty if yet typical american pub menu. Placed squarely in the campus section of the famed Telegraph Avenue, near People's Park, Raleigh's is a can't miss when visiting the city of Berkeley. Review © 2007, Wcities |

And don't forget to enjoy the meal with a glass of wine or one of the yummy cocktails. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Barbecue without the Bib |
1300 Tenth Street (Cross St. Gilman) Berkeley, California 94710 United States +1 510 527 0099 http://www.t-rex-bbq.com ouresya@yahoo.com |
In the laid back academic town of Berkeley, California there are few things that bring about competition like food. Every major street is dotted with unique restaurants showcasing cuisines from through out the world, as well as those that fuse exotic tastes together and make them palatable for common American taste buds. Of all the competition there is one that truly embodies Berkeley's passion for exciting food, that is Gilman Street's T-Rex Barbecue. Founded in 2005 by long time Bay Area Restaurateur Haig Krikorian, T-Rex has taken a modern stance on the classic barbecue joint and turned it into a sit-down restaurant that screams of class. Aside of the beautiful autumn hues and polished steel that line the interior, the main attraction is definitely the large portions of smoked meats and sides that are served daily. Local favorites include the massive long cut beef short rib or the classic baby back ribs, which are commonly paired with one of their interesting takes on standard sides like potato salad, macaroni and cheese, and corn bread. They also serve a wide array of custom cocktails, and beer cocktails that will surely compliment an entree. Whether it be for brunch, lunch, dinner, or just a drink and a light, ok, large snack, stop into T-Rex for delicious barbecue with Bay Area style. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Beer at the Movies |

The Parkway Speakeasy, which bills itself as "California's First Speakeasy Theater," is truly an anomaly. Patrons are invited to come in and enjoy the meticulously chosen program of films (from classics to indies to month-old Hollywood stuff), all while swigging beer and scarfing pizza. Understandably, the Parkway is insanely popular among locals. The food menu is as lovingly assembled as the movie calendar, featuring healthy sandwiches, hearty pastas, luscious salads, mediterranean specialties and decadent desserts. Pitchers of micro-brewed beer are as startlingly cheap as the theater's admission prices, and wine is offered by the glass or by the bottle. See website for menu, showtimes, event calendar, weekly specials (including family night), El Cerrito location details and more. cash only. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Hot Dogs Fed Exed |

Sometimes you want a Louisiana link that sends your tongue on a one-way trip to New Orleans, a decent kosher frank. That is what the owner wanted when he opened up this small stand: a taste of New York's famous ethnic sausages from its German, Italian and Polish neighborhoods. And they ship bulk orders around the world, too! Not surprisingly, this joint is a hit with local students grabbing a quick bite between classes or a satisfying break during a late-night study session. Place your order at the front and hang out while waiting for your link. Lemon Chicken, Kielbasa and the turkey "Bird Dog" are among the several appetizing selections. Review © 2007, Wcities |
