Bel Forno

Baked delights
1400 Shattuck Avenue
Berkeley, CA 94709
United States
+1 510 644 1601
From early morning till early evening, this place bakes up breads, pizzas and rolls, and makes great salads, sandwiches and breakfast goods. There are several small tables perfect for one or two, but many get items to go. It offers several sandwiches like Turkey Avocado, Roasted Eggplant and Chicken Breast Tarragon. Try one of the small pizzas like its Four Cheese, Margherita and Pugliese, perfect for a hungry one, or a light meal for two. Also find omelets served all day, salads that range from Caesar to Mediterranean, as well as fresh fruit smoothies.

Bette's Ocean View Diner

Diner chic on Fourth Street
1807-A Fourth Street
Berkeley, CA 94710
United States
+1 510 644 3230
The name's a bit misleading. Not only is there no ocean view, but this is not your ordinary diner. Though it has streamlined aluminum and black-and-white tile, and the fare is inspired by diner cuisine, the ingredients are the freshest available and the dishes are prepared with care and imagination. At breakfast, the cooks do wonderful things with the humble buttermilk pancake, and the scrambled eggs and tortilla chips are memorable, as well. At lunch, it is sandwiches and plate specials, which often feature a fresh fish filet. The to-go counter next door, offers sandwiches and mini-pizzas.

Bongo Burger

Drummin' up great burgers
2154 Center Street
Berkeley, CA 94704
United States
+1 510 548 7700
Since 1968, this restaurant has been serving chic and delicious burgers, bacon and baklava on the cheap. A cut above a greasy spoon or a fast food joint, it has a sleek, yellow and blue decor, comfy seats and apparent gloss. It serves breakfasts, like omelets with cheese, mushroom, bacon, or sausage, or eggs any style. Also find sandwiches with a decidedly Middle Eastern flair like the Shish Kebab Sandwich. Vegetarian selections include falafel and hummus sandwiches. But really, you are here for the burgers, which are big, cheap and juicy. Try the All-American and the Bacon. Everything is grilled and made to order.

http://www.caferouge.net
Cafe Rouge, located in the heart of Berkeley's hoppin' 4th Street shopping district, is an East Bay institution. Foodies flock from far and wide for treats as simple as a cheeseburger and as complex as a Mediterranean-style lamb shank entree. Menu items are rotated in and out of circulation every couple weeks, so expect to see new and exciting things every time you visit. Shellfish fans marvel at the massive oyster selection (officially celebrated at the weekly Oyster Wednesday party). Cafe Rouge is also well known for the quality of its meats, all of which come from the finest local and regional producers, and many of which are available for takeaway at the on-site Meat Market (where you'll also find all manner of cured meats, pates, terrines and sausages). See website for menus, wine lists and more.

Cascada

Healthy burritos and wraps
2164 Center Street
Berkeley, CA 94704
United States
+1 510 704 8688
Murals of villas and a marketplace grace the wall of this restaurant. The music is fun, the service great, the food cannot be beat. This eatery makes its ingredients in small batches, ensuring you get the freshest available. Its meat is hand-trimmed, lean and low in sodium. Healthy cooking is key here. Choose from a whole wheat, spinach or tomato tortilla. Wraps and burritos can be had traditionally, or more creatively, like the picante (with chipolte). Choose from chicken, beef, carnitas or chorizo, salmon, snapper and prawns. For breakfast, try Chorizo and Eggs, Huevos Rancheros or the Mexican Omelet.

Gilman Grill

Essential breakfast diner
1300 Fourth Street
Berkeley, CA 94710
United States
+1 510 524 2532
This spacious, diner-style dining room has green marble tabletops, high ceilings and hanging plants. You will always find parking in the restaurant's own parking lot. The kitchen prepares a variety of dishes, from low-calorie treats to sinful entrees. The breakfast portion of the menu is the highlight; however, the lunch menu is also a strong contender with homemade soups and grilled chicken sandwiches. But the shining stars are the delicious egg dishes dripping in Hollandaise Sauce. Try the Crab and Artichoke Benedict served with a side of perfectly cooked home-style potatoes, topped with a dollop of sour cream.

Welcome, but please, keep your cell phone off, otherwise you will be asked to leave. It has been witnessed. That said, this is the perfect spot to enjoy tasty, down-home American cuisine at incredibly reasonable prices. From three-egg omelets and French toast in the morning, to hearty soups, sandwiches and burgers in the afternoon, to slightly gourmet entrees at night, like Artichoke Calzone and Acadian Cassoulet. The setting bespeaks a simple country diner, with children's artwork papering one of the walls. The tables and booths are comfortable, though on weekends and peak times things really pick up.
