Located in the heart of downtown Berkeley, this most enjoyable little eatery is becoming a fast favorite of Berkeley locals. A different burger |
1600 Shattuck Avenue Berkeley, CA 94709 United States +1 510 849 2827 |
This favorite serves up a wide variety of hamburgers. It also has more than a dozen chicken, turkey and tofu selections, and ten different salads including Thai Chicken. The atmosphere is fun and casual with mod posters on the wall and friendly servers. The burgers are huge, as are the baskets of fries and onion rings, and the shakes thick and old fashioned. The burgers include the basic, the Popeye (fresh spinach) and the Louisiana Blackened. The chicken, turkey and tofu burgers include Teriyaki and Maui Waui. You can add extras like pesto, homemade salsa, guacamole and sauteed mushrooms. More serious vegetarians can try the Portabello Burgers. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Diner chic on Fourth Street |
1807-A Fourth Street Berkeley, CA 94710 United States +1 510 644 3230 |
The name's a bit misleading. Not only is there no ocean view, but this is not your ordinary diner. Though it has streamlined aluminum and black-and-white tile, and the fare is inspired by diner cuisine, the ingredients are the freshest available and the dishes are prepared with care and imagination. At breakfast, the cooks do wonderful things with the humble buttermilk pancake, and the scrambled eggs and tortilla chips are memorable, as well. At lunch, it is sandwiches and plate specials, which often feature a fresh fish filet. The to-go counter next door, offers sandwiches and mini-pizzas. Review © 2007, Wcities |

East Bay Gourmet |
1782 4th Street Berkeley, CA 94710 United States +1 510 525 1440 http://www.caferouge.net |
Cafe Rouge, located in the heart of Berkeley's hoppin' 4th Street shopping district, is an East Bay institution. Foodies flock from far and wide for treats as simple as a cheeseburger and as complex as a Mediterranean-style lamb shank entree. Menu items are rotated in and out of circulation every couple weeks, so expect to see new and exciting things every time you visit. Shellfish fans marvel at the massive oyster selection (officially celebrated at the weekly Oyster Wednesday party). Cafe Rouge is also well known for the quality of its meats, all of which come from the finest local and regional producers, and many of which are available for takeaway at the on-site Meat Market (where you'll also find all manner of cured meats, pates, terrines and sausages). See website for menus, wine lists and more. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Choose Capellini, Gemelli, Ravioli, Fusilli or Linguine. Even Gnocchi and Polenta are there to choose from. Add Pomodoro (tomato basil sauce), Milanese (scallops, basil, cream), Sausage, Bolognese (meat ragout and fresh herbs), Frutti de Mare and much more. It also offers healthy pastas that use only light oil and no butter or cream. The setting is small and comfortable with the added bonus of sidewalk seating. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Essential breakfast diner |
1300 Fourth Street Berkeley, CA 94710 United States +1 510 524 2532 |
This spacious, diner-style dining room has green marble tabletops, high ceilings and hanging plants. You will always find parking in the restaurant's own parking lot. The kitchen prepares a variety of dishes, from low-calorie treats to sinful entrees. The breakfast portion of the menu is the highlight; however, the lunch menu is also a strong contender with homemade soups and grilled chicken sandwiches. But the shining stars are the delicious egg dishes dripping in Hollandaise Sauce. Try the Crab and Artichoke Benedict served with a side of perfectly cooked home-style potatoes, topped with a dollop of sour cream. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Pints & Slices |
2033 San Pablo Avenue (at University Avenue) Berkeley, CA 94702 United States +1 510 845 1652 http://www.lanesplitterpizza.com |
At this East Bay beer and pizza joint, located on San Pablo Avenue in Berkeley, patrons can feast on thin and crispy slices while momentarily evading the bustle of the noisy neighborhood intersection outside. Begin your meal with a big salad full of fresh veggies and topped with your choice of house-made dressings. The pies here are strictly New York-style (some with names like "Carnivore," "Garbage Pie" and the cult classic, "Heartstopper" with bacon and Gorgonzola), and regulars will attest that Lanesplitter does it right. Plenty of tables and a ton of barstools mean there's almost always a spot for you, and there's even a charming patio out back complete with heat lamps and picnic tables. On the stereo: rock 'n' roll. On the walls: a rotating collection of locally produced artwork. On tap: a rotating selection of more than a dozen locally produced microbrews (including Russian River Brewing Company's Damnation, a favorite of regulars). See website for menu and more. Caribbean Cuisine Carefully Cooked |
2836 Sacramento Street Berkeley, CA 94710 United States +1 510 486 1202 |
Penny's Caribbean Cafe is not in Berkeley's finest neighborhood, but it is not a restaurant for those interested in luxury. Penny's is for those interested in great food. Operated only by the lovable Penny herself, this cafe caters to anyone looking for a relaxing, yet amazing meal. All food is cooked from scratch, so it takes slightly longer to get a dish than at an average restaurant (you're on island time at Penny's), but after tasting the Goat Roti or the Mango Bread, the wait will have been worth it. Wash it all down with some Ginger Beer and your taste buds will be singing for more. A word to the brave, though, the hot sauce puts its name to the test. Review © 2007, Wcities |

No cell phones, please |
5492 College Avenue Berkeley, CA 94618 United States +1 510 653 1567 http://www.rockridgeshop.com/ |
Welcome, but please, keep your cell phone off, otherwise you will be asked to leave. It has been witnessed. That said, this is the perfect spot to enjoy tasty, down-home American cuisine at incredibly reasonable prices. From three-egg omelets and French toast in the morning, to hearty soups, sandwiches and burgers in the afternoon, to slightly gourmet entrees at night, like Artichoke Calzone and Acadian Cassoulet. The setting bespeaks a simple country diner, with children's artwork papering one of the walls. The tables and booths are comfortable, though on weekends and peak times things really pick up. Best Chinese in Elmwood |
2914 College Avenue Berkeley, CA 94705 United States +1 510 883 1777 |
If you are in the Bay area, a visit to Shen Hua is a must. Known for its Szechwan preparations, the eatery serves the best Chinese food in the area. The menu offers a good variety in dishes and the food served is fresh, well-flavored, and always arrives quickly to your table. Patrons would recommend the Prawns a la Shen Hua and Cashew Chicken. The cocktails served are decent, and go well with the food. The restaurant gets crowded, so make sure you reach there in time! Review © 2007, Wcities |
