Bette's Ocean View Diner

Diner chic on Fourth Street
1807-A Fourth Street
Berkeley, CA 94710
United States
+1 510 644 3230
The name's a bit misleading. Not only is there no ocean view, but this is not your ordinary diner. Though it has streamlined aluminum and black-and-white tile, and the fare is inspired by diner cuisine, the ingredients are the freshest available and the dishes are prepared with care and imagination. At breakfast, the cooks do wonderful things with the humble buttermilk pancake, and the scrambled eggs and tortilla chips are memorable, as well. At lunch, it is sandwiches and plate specials, which often feature a fresh fish filet. The to-go counter next door, offers sandwiches and mini-pizzas.

Cafe Intermezzo

Salad in the window?
2442 Telegraph Avenue
Berkeley, CA 94704
United States
+1 510 849 4592
Find a high ceiling and wall murals that lend an Italian countryside feel. The windows looking out onto the street are large, so you can watch the foot traffic go by. The salads (chef, green or veggie) are easily sharable by two or three people. They are made with the freshest of ingredients and come with the house's homemade honey wheat bread. Sandwiches like roast beef, turkey, ham and vegetarian, are equally as sharable as the salads. Try the robust and strong Indo Noir or the heady Moka Java coffee with a fresh pastry.

Gilman Grill

Essential breakfast diner
1300 Fourth Street
Berkeley, CA 94710
United States
+1 510 524 2532
This spacious, diner-style dining room has green marble tabletops, high ceilings and hanging plants. You will always find parking in the restaurant's own parking lot. The kitchen prepares a variety of dishes, from low-calorie treats to sinful entrees. The breakfast portion of the menu is the highlight; however, the lunch menu is also a strong contender with homemade soups and grilled chicken sandwiches. But the shining stars are the delicious egg dishes dripping in Hollandaise Sauce. Try the Crab and Artichoke Benedict served with a side of perfectly cooked home-style potatoes, topped with a dollop of sour cream.

Craving a good New York deli? One of the few places in the Gourmet Ghetto where you can find decent pastrami on dark rye, Saul's large, echo-y, spacious interior has just enough chutzpah to take you back to Katz's on the Lower East Side. Grab sandwiches or kugel to go at the counter, or sit down to an array of smoked fish platters, Middle Eastern treats, omelettes, the best deli meats around, and homemade cole slaw, potato salad and chopped liver. It also does large scale catering for "Bar/Bat Mitzvahs, Business Meetings...Showers, Weddings and Divorces."

The Coffee Spot

Fast, cheap, tasty
2475, Bancroft Way
Berkeley, CA 94720
United States
+1 510 486 0550
Welcome to the best on campus bagels that bagel friendly Berkeley has to offer. Ask any self-respecting student about the "#2" and their taste buds will start to crave the bagel of their choice with cream cheese, fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, and salt and pepper. Costing less than two dollars, the "#2" is a steal of a deal, so feel free to spend that extra change on a coffee or splurge for a baklava. This is a popular hang out for the Berkeley intelligentsia, so be ready to rub shoulders and discuss the finer points of poppy seeds with Nobel prize winners.
