Barney's Gourmet Hamburgers

A different burger
1600 Shattuck Avenue
Berkeley, CA 94709
United States
+1 510 849 2827
This favorite serves up a wide variety of hamburgers. It also has more than a dozen chicken, turkey and tofu selections, and ten different salads including Thai Chicken. The atmosphere is fun and casual with mod posters on the wall and friendly servers. The burgers are huge, as are the baskets of fries and onion rings, and the shakes thick and old fashioned. The burgers include the basic, the Popeye (fresh spinach) and the Louisiana Blackened. The chicken, turkey and tofu burgers include Teriyaki and Maui Waui. You can add extras like pesto, homemade salsa, guacamole and sauteed mushrooms. More serious vegetarians can try the Portabello Burgers.

There are several small tables perfect for one or two, but many get items to go. It offers several sandwiches like Turkey Avocado, Roasted Eggplant and Chicken Breast Tarragon. Try one of the small pizzas like its Four Cheese, Margherita and Pugliese, perfect for a hungry one, or a light meal for two. Also find omelets served all day, salads that range from Caesar to Mediterranean, as well as fresh fruit smoothies.

Venezuelan corn cakes, Guatamelan tamales, Ecuadorian Potato cake—if that doesn't sound slurpilicious enough—try the primavera salad which is the chef's pick. The view of the "Gourmet Ghetto" outside along with a variety of tapas really makes for an enjoyable evening. If you want to share the experience with your friends the venue can be hired for private parties or for the most special day of your life—your wedding.

Cesar

Tapas chic
1515 Shattuck Avenue
Berkeley, CA 94709
United States
+1 510 883 0222
http://www.barcesar.com/
This chic little eatery in the Gourmet Ghetto shows that trendy tapas can hold their own with traditional restaurants. With subdued lighting, pale woods, and a more mellow atmosphere, Cesar is far from the rowdy, happy hour tapas places you will find in the big city. Enjoy specialties like the Endive Watercress Salad, Lentil Soup, Roasted Grapes al Jamon, and Baby Clams in Mojo Verde. The alcohol list is extensive indeed (pages long as a matter of fact) with many specialty and imported liquors and a nice selection of complementary wines.

Cha Am

Get Thai-ed by some of the best
1543 Shattuck Avenue
Berkeley, CA 94709
United States
+1 510 848 9664
Known throughout Berkeley as well as around the Bay as one of the premier Thai spots in the area, Cha Am continues to garner Best Of The Bay awards and charm guests with its lovely enclosed patio and even lovelier food. Perhaps it is the "Authentic Thai Herbs" touted on the menu, but everything tastes piquant and delicious, and is not unreasonably priced. Try the traditional Tom Ka Guy soup followed by Golden Triangles. The Rice Plates and Prawns in Chili are good hits. For vegetarians, they offer many noodle and tofu dishes.

Not the usual sushi
1686 Shattuck Avenue
Berkeley, CA 94709
United States
+1 510 981 1213
Here you will find strictly vegetarian Japanese dishes. All types of postmodern renditions of sushi and soba dishes can be had, and at remarkable prices to boot. Appetizers include said Robata (broiled veggies on skewers) and Kakiage (deep fried veggies). The noodle dishes are filling and steamy. Try the a la carte sushi, all veggie of course, and served on fingers of rice nigiri-style. Complete dinners, including miso soup and house salad include the Sushi Combo, Hosomaki Combo and the Soba Sushi (buckwheat noodle sushi with dipping sauce).

Few restaurants are known worldwide. Welcome to the jewel in Berkeley's culinary crown, the restaurant around which the famous Gourmet Ghetto has grown. Alice Waters opened this restaurant in 1971 in the hopes of marrying the best in international culinary skills with locally produced organic ingredients, all in the atmosphere of a friendly dinner party. She has more than succeeded. In this intimate setting of brick and wood, an upstairs cafe was opened to offer the delights and flavors of Chez Panisse with a more casual setting and more casual prices. The menu changes daily, but an example of dinner includes Oyster Bisque with Tomales Bay Oysters and Herb Croutons, Oregon Steelhead with Rose Butter, and Apple Jalousie Tart with Candied Orange Ice Cream. The wine list is extensive, featuring dozens and dozens of wines from almost as many countries. Bottles run from USD22 to several hundred.

When in Berkeley, do drop by this café for scrumptious refreshments. You just can't miss the aroma of the fresh pastries, the Panini Sandwich, and warm and crisp Organic Cornmeal Waffles served here. Formerly home to Smokey Joe's, the recently done up interiors of Guerilla Café throw you back to the retro '70s. Pieces of art created by the owners are displayed on the tables and walls. And just in case you are not in the mood for tea or coffee, sip some freshly squeezed juice or a tall glass of milk with honey? It's all positive here!

Berkeley, CA 94706
United States
+1 510 527 9838
http://www.lalimes.com/
Lalime's has been a Berkeley institution for over 15 years and has been evolving constantly to maintain their reputation for fine Mediterranean-French cuisine. Their menu changes every couple of weeks so their patrons will always have something new to experience, and every dish is made with fresh, organic ingredients. Among the favorites are the Roast Beet Salad with Humboldt Fog cheese, the Mussels steamed in Belgian Beer, the Roast Rack of Australian Lamb, and the Wild Mushroom Stroganoff. An impressive wine list accompanies the menu, offering tastes from Spain, Italy, France, Germany, Austria, and California. On certain holidays, the restaurant will host special dinners and serve a new entree that surpasses anything on the menu. Check the website for a listing of these events. Thai Delight

Absolutely delightful
1700 Shattuck Avenue
Berkeley, CA 94709
United States
+1 510 549 0611
This is the perfect place for a nice, low-key Thai lunch or dinner in a comfortably elegant setting (traditional artwork, Asian lamps, leafy plants) where locals come for good Thai food with many vegetarian options. The service is friendly, the menu vast and inexpensive. Although most of the menu is fairly traditional (the ubiquitous Pad Thai, the ever faithful and comforting Coconut Chicken Soup), you will find some truly delightful and unique options like the Chu-Chi (a red curry) or a very tasty Pineapple Fried Rice. The vegetarian options include various sauteed veggie dishes, Basil Tofu and Silver Noodles.

With exceptional service in a comfortable setting, this eatery has been serving Berkeley's sushi needs since the 1990s. Sit beneath the large paper lanterns at one of the few tables and enjoy your seafood in a mellow, relaxed atmosphere. The nigiri is relatively inexpensive, and includes the usual suspects like octopus, eel, maguro and sea urchin. There is also a nice selection of bamboo rolls, like avocado, crab and tobiko. If raw fish is not your thing, try the many teriyaki dishes, including steak, chicken and salmon.

The owner strongly believes in the health benefits of a vegetarian diet (as the news clippings posted to the door will attest) and in having everything fresh and bursting with seasonal goodness. Try vegetarian variations on old favorites, including Chow Mein, Lo Mein and combinations like the Black Mushroom and Greens or Braised Eggplant. For those who miss the texture of meat, there are many dishes made with bean gluten. Cash only.
