Cafe Rouge

East Bay Gourmet
1782 4th Street
Berkeley, CA 94710
United States
+1 510 525 1440
http://www.caferouge.net
Cafe Rouge, located in the heart of Berkeley's hoppin' 4th Street shopping district, is an East Bay institution. Foodies flock from far and wide for treats as simple as a cheeseburger and as complex as a Mediterranean-style lamb shank entree. Menu items are rotated in and out of circulation every couple weeks, so expect to see new and exciting things every time you visit. Shellfish fans marvel at the massive oyster selection (officially celebrated at the weekly Oyster Wednesday party). Cafe Rouge is also well known for the quality of its meats, all of which come from the finest local and regional producers, and many of which are available for takeaway at the on-site Meat Market (where you'll also find all manner of cured meats, pates, terrines and sausages). See website for menus, wine lists and more.

Chez Panisse

The one and only

Few restaurants are known worldwide. Welcome to the jewel in Berkeley's culinary crown, the restaurant around which the famous Gourmet Ghetto has grown. Alice Waters opened this restaurant in 1971 in the hopes of marrying the best in international culinary skills with locally produced organic ingredients, all in the atmosphere of a friendly dinner party. She has more than succeeded. In this intimate setting of brick and wood, an upstairs cafe was opened to offer the delights and flavors of Chez Panisse with a more casual setting and more casual prices. The menu changes daily, but an example of dinner includes Oyster Bisque with Tomales Bay Oysters and Herb Croutons, Oregon Steelhead with Rose Butter, and Apple Jalousie Tart with Candied Orange Ice Cream. The wine list is extensive, featuring dozens and dozens of wines from almost as many countries. Bottles run from USD22 to several hundred.

The streets of Berkeley's North Side are lined with some of the best hole-in-the-wall eateries the Bay Area has to offer. Gregoire, in particular, is where you'll taste the finest French style takeout. Their menu changes monthly and with each menu, you can taste amazing, organically made sandwiches like "Leg of Lamb," "Smoked Salmon in Traditional Blinis," "Smoked Duck," and so much more. The "Potato Puffs" alone are worth coming to Gregoire for.

Guerilla Cafe

Organic is its mantra
1620 Shattuck Avenue
Berkeley, CA 94709
United States
+1 510 845 2233
http://www.guerillacafe.com/
When in Berkeley, do drop by this café for scrumptious refreshments. You just can't miss the aroma of the fresh pastries, the Panini Sandwich, and warm and crisp Organic Cornmeal Waffles served here. Formerly home to Smokey Joe's, the recently done up interiors of Guerilla Café throw you back to the retro '70s. Pieces of art created by the owners are displayed on the tables and walls. And just in case you are not in the mood for tea or coffee, sip some freshly squeezed juice or a tall glass of milk with honey? It's all positive here!

Lalime's

Ever-Changing High-Class Dining
1329 Gilman Street
Berkeley, CA 94706
United States
+1 510 527 9838
http://www.lalimes.com/
Lalime's has been a Berkeley institution for over 15 years and has been evolving constantly to maintain their reputation for fine Mediterranean-French cuisine. Their menu changes every couple of weeks so their patrons will always have something new to experience, and every dish is made with fresh, organic ingredients. Among the favorites are the Roast Beet Salad with Humboldt Fog cheese, the Mussels steamed in Belgian Beer, the Roast Rack of Australian Lamb, and the Wild Mushroom Stroganoff. An impressive wine list accompanies the menu, offering tastes from Spain, Italy, France, Germany, Austria, and California. On certain holidays, the restaurant will host special dinners and serve a new entree that surpasses anything on the menu. Check the website for a listing of these events. Seating tends to be limited during peak dining hours so reservations are highly recommended.

Lanesplitter Pizza & Pub

Pints & Slices
2033 San Pablo Avenue
(at University Avenue)
Berkeley, CA 94702
United States
+1 510 845 1652
http://www.lanesplitterpizza.com
At this East Bay beer and pizza joint, located on San Pablo Avenue in Berkeley, patrons can feast on thin and crispy slices while momentarily evading the bustle of the noisy neighborhood intersection outside. Begin your meal with a big salad full of fresh veggies and topped with your choice of house-made dressings. The pies here are strictly New York-style (some with names like "Carnivore," "Garbage Pie" and the cult classic, "Heartstopper" with bacon and Gorgonzola), and regulars will attest that Lanesplitter does it right. Plenty of tables and a ton of barstools mean there's almost always a spot for you, and there's even a charming patio out back complete with heat lamps and picnic tables. On the stereo: rock 'n' roll. On the walls: a rotating collection of locally produced artwork. On tap: a rotating selection of more than a dozen locally produced microbrews (including Russian River Brewing Company's Damnation, a favorite of regulars). See website for menu and more.
