Cafe Rouge

Cafe Rouge, located in the heart of Berkeley's hoppin' 4th Street shopping district, is an East Bay institution. Foodies flock from far and wide for treats as simple as a cheeseburger and as complex as a Mediterranean-style lamb shank entree. Menu items are rotated in and out of circulation every couple weeks, so expect to see new and exciting things every time you visit. Shellfish fans marvel at the massive oyster selection (officially celebrated at the weekly Oyster Wednesday party). Cafe Rouge is also well known for the quality of its meats, all of which come from the finest local and regional producers, and many of which are available for takeaway at the on-site Meat Market (where you'll also find all manner of cured meats, pates, terrines and sausages). See website for menus, wine lists and more.

Few restaurants are known worldwide. Welcome to the jewel in Berkeley's culinary crown, the restaurant around which the famous Gourmet Ghetto has grown. Alice Waters opened this restaurant in 1971 in the hopes of marrying the best in international culinary skills with locally produced organic ingredients, all in the atmosphere of a friendly dinner party. She has more than succeeded. In this intimate setting of brick and wood, an upstairs cafe was opened to offer the delights and flavors of Chez Panisse with a more casual setting and more casual prices. The menu changes daily, but an example of dinner includes Oyster Bisque with Tomales Bay Oysters and Herb Croutons, Oregon Steelhead with Rose Butter, and Apple Jalousie Tart with Candied Orange Ice Cream. The wine list is extensive, featuring dozens and dozens of wines from almost as many countries. Bottles run from USD22 to several hundred.

Citron

Elegance in yellow

Berkeley, CA 94618
United States
+1 510 653 5484
Citron is a world of subtle yellow accents and brilliant food. Art Deco glass sconces adorn the yellow walls, with black and white prints that break up the monotony. The menu is a fusion of seafood and local ingredients, with styles that range from Spanish, French, Italian and American, making this place very Californian indeed. Try the Paella Citron with its generous shrimp and shellfish and perfectly spiced rice. Small plates include the Warm Artichoke Confit. The menu is subject to change seasonally, and specials appear daily. The wine selection features Napa Valley vintages.

The menu changes monthly and seasonally, assuring you the freshest ingredients. Past appetizers have included Grilled Salt Cod Fritters. Giglio

Garlic braids and woven flasks
5427 College Avenue
Berkeley, CA 94618
United States
+1 510 594 0798
Garlic wreaths and dried peppers hang in the windows. Bottles of Chianti and herb-infused olive oil sit on each table. This small, Italian bistro has 14 tables, opens for dinner only, and serves up delicious meals in a romantic setting. Find a nice selection of standard Italian fare and daily specials. Start off with the delicious Zuppa di Pomodora e Aglio, vegetable soup with crostini. Entrees include creative pasta dishes like the Fettucini Popalina and traditional meat dishes like Osso Bucco. Find a nice selection of Californian and Italian wines, but go for the house Chianti, which complements every dish.

Lalime's

Ever-Changing High-Class Dining
1329 Gilman Street
Berkeley, CA 94706
United States
+1 510 527 9838
http://www.lalimes.com/
Lalime's has been a Berkeley institution for over 15 years and has been evolving constantly to maintain their reputation for fine Mediterranean-French cuisine. Their menu changes every couple of weeks so their patrons will always have something new to experience, and every dish is made with fresh, organic ingredients. Among the favorites are the Roast Beet Salad with Humboldt Fog cheese, the Mussels steamed in Belgian Beer, the Roast Rack of Australian Lamb, and the Wild Mushroom Stroganoff. An impressive wine list accompanies the menu, offering tastes from Spain, Italy, France, Germany, Austria, and California. On certain holidays, the restaurant will host special dinners and serve a new entree that surpasses anything on the menu. Check the website for a listing of these events. Seating tends to be limited during peak dining hours so reservations are highly recommended.

Oliveto Restaurant & Cafe

Superb Italian Cuisine
5655 College Avenue
Berkeley, CA 94618
United States
+1 510 547 5356
http://www.oliveto.com
Chef Paul Bertolli's magical use of local, seasonal products has created the type of highbrow Italian menu that reportedly causes sound-minded adults to fall to their knees and weep openly from the taste bud euphoria. So as to assure absolute freshness the menu changes daily. Past entrees have included spit-roasted lamb (USD30) and roasted northern halibut (USD30). The wine menu rates as superb. For a more casual atmosphere, opt for the restaurant's adjoining café. Reservations are strongly suggested.

The Parkway Speakeasy Theater

Beer at the Movies
1834 Park Boulevard
(at E. 18th Street)
Berkeley, CA 94606
United States
+1 510 814 2400 / Office: +1 510 848 1994
http://www.speakeasytheaters.com
The Parkway Speakeasy, which bills itself as "California's First Speakeasy Theater," is truly an anomaly. Patrons are invited to come in and enjoy the meticulously chosen program of films (from classics to indies to month-old Hollywood stuff), all while swigging beer and scarfing pizza. Understandably, the Parkway is insanely popular among locals. The food menu is as lovingly assembled as the movie calendar, featuring healthy sandwiches, hearty pastas, luscious salads, mediterranean specialties and decadent desserts. Pitchers of micro-brewed beer are as startlingly cheap as the theater's admission prices, and wine is offered by the glass or by the bottle. See website for menu, showtimes, event calendar, weekly specials (including family night), El Cerrito location details and more.

cash only.
