At Beanery Coffee, you can sip coffee at one of the dark, cherry wood tables beneath colorful French posters, or (weather permitting) enjoy your brew in the patio out back. There are also benches out front if you like to watch the foot traffic. The crowd ranges from mellow locals, to students deep in thought, to the stroller set. It offers standard coffee and espresso drinks like mochas, lattes, cappuccinos and their house coffee (which is rich, strong and robust). You will find a small assortment of pastries and bagels, muffins and brownies as well. You can buy a variety of nicely roasted coffee beans by the pound. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A traditional soda fountain |
2900 College Avenue Berkeley, CA 94705 United States +1 510 843 1300 |
This pharmacy will remind you of a time long ago. Built in the 1920s, it retains many of its old-fashioned trappings, like displayed apothecarial gear, old signs and most importantly, its bar-stooled soda counter, where you can saddle up for a hot fudge sundae, egg cream or quick griddle meal while the pharmacist fills your prescription. It offers an assortment of toiletries, notions, magazines and books, minor household items and gifts and has a growing aromatherapy and holistic remedy section. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Coffee and Calzones! |
2960 College Avenue Berkeley, CA 94705 United States +1 510 644 3773 http://www.espressoroma.com/ |
For decades, this large coffeehouse on the corner of Ashby and College has been a veritable institution in Berkeley, like the University itself. A place for students to study over excellent espresso, and artists and writers to create while munching on a croissant. The floor is Tuscan tiled, the ceiling vaulted. Order at the coffee counter and seat yourself at a table, at the small circular bar, or at one of a handful of tables outside with the view of the College/Ashby foot traffic. Try the large, stuffed calzones filled with cheese, meat, veggies and fresh sauce. Note: Cash only. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Since 1997, this very Zen-like establishment has brought a little bit of the Far East to Elmwood. It features greens, blacks and oolongs from China, Korea and Japan, as well as several herbals from the Middle East and North Africa, everything from the delicate Dragon Well to the feisty Purple Bamboo. It also sells a variety of handcrafted teapots and bowls from the East, including genuine Yi Zhing pots. Buy in bulk, or enjoy a steaming pot upstairs at one of the tables or on a tatami mat. Crusade for Great Falafel |
2965 College Avenue Berkeley, CA 94705 United States +1 510 665 1672 http://www.holylandrestaurant.... |
Holy Land is heavenly indeed. The owners, Niso and Hay Mizrachi, cook terrific Israeli and Middle Eastern cuisine. Everything is fresh, tasty and made quickly. This small, casual space has only 10 tables that fill up quickly at lunch and dinner times. Photographs of Israel and the Middle East hang on the walls beneath overgrown ivy plants. The delicious pitas can be filled with lamb or chicken kebab, shawerma, falafel or a combination of hummus or tabbouleh. The lunch platters include salad and side dishes. Dinner platters are served with a thick hummus dipping sauce and pita bread. Review © 2007, Wcities |

No better baking |
2708 Russell Street (at the corner of College Avenue) Berkeley, CA 94705 United States +1 510 845 2253 |
Elmwood locals have been coming here since 1976. Sit at one of a handful of tables with coffee and the famous Danish pastry, a cinnamon twist or croissant or one of the best chocolate-dipped macaroons you will ever have. You can admire the featured artwork by a local artists, or just sit and take in the Old World aroma of freshly baked goodies. Buy cakes by the slice or whole, including the zesty Carrot Pineapple. The freshly baked bread is wonderful. The owners do special orders, sometimes as fast as the same day. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Tuscany on College Avenue |
2985 College Avenue Berkeley, CA 94618 United States +1 510 848 5544 |
Looking for a bit of Northern Italian cuisine in the Elmwood district? Come here. Little touches lend an air of Tuscan romance, like the imported wines, risottos, garlic, mushrooms and oils in the window. The statuary and artwork, the murals on the rustic walls and the hearty setting of an off-the-beaten-path trattoria will transport you from the craziness of Berkeley. Being northern Italian, the cuisine favors robust gnocchi, polenta and risotto over pasta. Try the Ravioli Rustica, the Polpette with Gnocchi or one of the many Pizzas like the Napoletana, Gorganzola or the Calzone of the day. Only cash is accepted. Review © 2007, Wcities |
