Annapurna

Keeping culture alive since 1969
2416 Telegraph Ave
Berkeley, CA 94704
United States
+1 510 841 6187
http://www.annapurnaberkeley.com
Since 1969, this place has been the subversive heart of Telegraph Avenue, providing everything from pipes to toys for grown-ups, and pumping out the sounds of Iggy Pop, and Nirvana onto the sidewalk. Inside this darkly cavernous store, you will be lucky to see an inch of black wall or ceiling for all the paraphernalia, including a huge assortment of glass, metal and water pipes, hookahs, incense and tobacco, jewelry and gnomes. It also carries various adult toys and videos, and has an impressive array of imported ethnic arts and crafts, as well as greeting and postcards.

She features work mainly by local artists and craftspeople, but includes many others from around the world as well. On any given day, you might find fairy dolls, gorgeous spiral wine racks, handpainted dinner plates, mugs and bowls, and a wonderful collection of silver, gold, and platinum jewelry, all handcrafted and original. Soiree

Wearable art
5407 College Avenue
(at the corner of Hudson Street)
Berkeley, CA 94618
United States
+1 510 601 5822
Own a piece of ready-to-wear art. When Kathleen Clancy and Deborah Starks opened this place, they wanted to create an "artful boutique with an elegant sensibility," and that they have. Once you enter this small, two-story shop, you will find yourself surrounded by hand-crafted apparel and accessories you thought only existed in European boutiques of yesteryear. There are hats, dresses, belts and jewelry, all made by local artists, milliners and designers. You can find unique bridal gowns and accessories, too, as well as rare finds like handmade flower clips by Kate Bishop, the costume designer for the movie Titanic.

Telegraph Avenue Street Vendors

Cottage industry
Telegraph Avenue
(from Bancroft Avenue to Dwight Way)
Berkeley, CA 94704
United States
Since the 1960s, the street vendors of Telegraph Avenue have been fixtures here. It began as a few students and artists trying to earn a buck selling their handmade wares and has turned into a thriving and colorful open-air market. You can purchase jewelry, crockery, clothing, books, incense, pipes, bags, etc. Follow the Deadhead music to the Russell's amazing display of pottery. He can tell you stories about the late 60s, when he slept in the trees and chained his goods to the street-poles to keep the police from confiscating them. Note: Credit card acceptance varies by vendor.
