People come from miles around |
2455 Telegraph Avenue Berkeley, CA 94704 United States +1 510 549 1125 |
This destination draws music lovers from all over the Bay Area. When you first walk in, you will be overwhelmed by the vast selection of CDs, vinyl and tapes. Take a deep breath, find your area of interest, and begin. It boasts one of the largest selections of any used music store in the East Bay, and not a subject, from the most common to the most eclectic, goes uncovered. The classical section is most impressive, as is the collection of vinyl and posters. Be prepared to spend a few hours hunting and discovering. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Huge selection |
2020 Oregon Street Berkeley, CA 94703 United States +1 510 843 6929 http://www.berkeleybowl.com/ |
Once a small and funky co-op store where you could find locally grown and organic produce, this store moved into a former Safeway building and expanded its offerings to appeal to everyone from the granola to the yuppie. You will still find bushels of fresh and organic produce, a wine selection to rival most specialty wine shops, and a complete bakery, butcher and fish market. It specializes in organic items, but there are many national and conventional brands as well. Bulk buying for grains and nuts and pasta is second to none, and the cheese section is first-rate. Here book-lovers will find the romantic notion of shelves stacked up to the ceiling with books, so heavy they threaten to give way. The fading smell of bookbinding glue conjures images of ancient libraries. You could spend hours wandering the aisles like that kid in The Neverending Story. If you do not find what you are looking for, which is nearly impossible since Moe's has just about everything ever printed, you are sure to find something to appease you. For those looking for antique or rare books, check out the huge collection on the fourth floor. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Fantastic selection |
2401 Telegraph Avenue Berkeley, CA 94704 United States +1 510 848 9004 |
Like its partner in music crime, Amoeba Records down the street, Rasputin's name on Telegraph Avenue connotes hours spent rifling through bins and bins of varied music. Although you will find more new and popular releases than down the street, there is a great selection of smaller and local labels promoting rap and hip hop and a small but nice used CD and vinyl area. The store is always buying items if you want to trade something old for something new. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Since its founding in 1964, Shakespeare & Co. has become one of Telegraph Avenue's world famous bookstores. Here you will find tomes stacked floor to ceiling, close as stalagmites. Although it carries some new titles and bestsellers, the treasures are its used books, with thousands covering just about every subject and genre. Vintage, retro and kitsch |
2505 Telegraph Avenue Berkeley, CA 94704 United States +1 510 841 8736 |
It is like a museum of 20th-century clothing here. This shop specializes in, and is quite proud of, its collection of all things Hawaiian, so there is no lack of bright shirts, hats, surfing shorts, authentic grass skirts and other items shipped directly from Hawaii. You will also find an impressive and ever-changing collection of vintage items spanning the decades from the 1940s onward, with plenty of swinging 70s polyester button-downs and polos with turtles on the pocket to spice up even the dullest of wardrobes. Support small business |
Shattuck Avenue (from Center to Kittredge streets) Berkeley, CA 94704 United States |
Although not nearly as large as the Telegraph Avenue street vendor scene, the vendors here in downtown nevertheless offer a large selection of handmade and retail items and one-of-a-kind gifts. On weekends, most tables are set up with the largest selections, but even during the week there's bound to be a handful of vendors peddling their wares. On any given day you will find a wide variety of incense, oils, beads, jewelry, pipes, more incense, books, hats and bags, and oh yes, the incense. Looking for something unique? Check them out. Gifts through the looking glass |
2632 Ashby Avenue Berkeley, CA 94705 United States +1 510 841 9891 |
Shopping here is rather like slipping through Lewis Carroll's looking glass. Dried flowers, French silk ribbons, antique figurines of saints, earrings, odd-shaped vases and an ever-changing selection of curios await you in a carefully arranged jumble. The net effect is rather surreal and, on the whole, pleasant. You will feel as if you have slipped out of the hurry-scurry 21st century and into a dreamy past of perfect gifts.
