Initiated by the American military, this festival first took place in West Berlin in 1951. Today, the festival treads the middle ground between East and West and has become an international forum for international films. The competition, which is judged by an international jury, takes centre stage at the festival and winners are presented with a golden bear. Premières and first screenings by both established filmmakers and newcomers, as well as documentaries from the last year are screened alongside short films.
