This healthfood store is not called Insel (island) because Berlin was an island before the wall came down. The real reason for the name is that it is located at the entrance to the Rote Insel (red island) - that part of the district of Schöneberg which is isolated by the S-Bahn rails from all sides and which was a stronghold of the red socialists before the war. Nowadays it is a stronghold of the young and no-longer-as-young alternative scene, which revels in the special offers from the wide range of health food and natural cosmetics on offer.
