A plastic model of the TV Tower or the Brandenburg Gate aren't the most original souvenirs. And the fragments of the Berlin Wall which are sold by street vendors all over the city are hardly likely to be genuine. Then how about a real piece of German craftsmanship? The hand-made wooden toys and decorations from the Erzgebirge, a chain of mountains stretching along the Czech boarder, make fantastic souvenirs because they are original, well-made and even ecologically-friendly. This traditional mining region began to produce wooden toys centuries ago in order to increase the poor mining families' income. And they have never looked back since.
