The Berlin publisher Nicolai used to have its headquarters in the historic Nicolaihaus in Mitte, which is now a museum. A second branch was opened in the district of Friedenau in 1925, and was turned into Nicolai's main bookshop some 15 years ago. A cast iron stairway winds its way up to the first floor where a selection of travel guides, foreign language dictionaries and English language novels are stocked. The ground floor consists largely of contemporary literature from all over the world. The main focus, however, is on Berlin literature. The collection of old sepia postcards featuring pictures of pre-War Berlin fits in perfectly. Review © 2009, Wcities |
