From a palace to a café |
Unter den Linden 5 Berlin, Berlin 10117 +49 (0)30 20 2683 http://www.opernpalais.de/ |
Situated next-door to the State Opera House, the Opernpalais, built in 1733-37 by F.W.Diterichs, is connected to the older Crown Prince's Palace by an arched bridge. As the city residence of Friedrich III's three daughters, the building was long referred to as the "Princess' Palace". Nowadays, it is home to two restaurants and the Opera Café. The latter provides a rare oppurtunity to enjoy 19th century-style luxuries in modern-day Berlin. The traditional coffee and cakes, as well as the decor complete with brass fittings and oil paintings, all serve to add to the regal, old-world charm of the café. The patio garden makes this a particularly popular destination in the summer. Review © 2009, Wcities |
