Ostbahnhof, like Bahnhof Zoo, is located on the central east-west line which runs through the city, two S-Bahn stations east of Alexanderplatz. It used to be East Berlin's main station before the fall of the Wall. Most trains which stop at Bahnhof Zoo begin their journey here. Ostbahnhof is therefore particularly useful for people staying in the eastern part of the city. The station itself was modernised and little remains of the original East German building.
