Rykestrasse Synagogue

Turn of the Century Synagogue
Rykestrasse 53
Berlin 10405
+49 30 448 5298
Opened in 1904, The Rykestrasse synagogue in Berlin was built in a neo-Romanesque style by local architect Johann Hoeniger. When the Nazi's first rose to power, the synagogue was a Jewish community center, but it was soon taken over by the German army. Nonetheless, the building retains much of its ornate interior. The red-brick were similar to the churches of the time, and it illustrates the identification that Berlin's Jews felt with their Christian brethren at the end of the 19th century. In recent years, the synagogue has witnessed a revival of sorts, establishing itself as one of the foremost centers of Jewish learning in central Europe.
