St. Thomas church

Colossal yet plain
Mariannenplatz
Berlin, Berlin 10997

When this late-classicist period building was completed in 1869, the protestant community of St.Thomas was one of the world's largest Christian communities with over 150,000 members. Today, the community consists of just 2,000. The church was constructed in the form of a Latin cross, with a 56 metre-high dome and two imposing towers. The interior, however, is relatively plain and barely worthy of mention if it were not for one particular detail—The "Shroud of Kreuzberg", which was created by the community's children and adults in 1989. The legendary riots which take place near here on 1st May every year are also depicted.
