It all began in 1949 as a mail order service. The coffee was sent wrapped in towels and handkerchieves which could then be reused. The strategy of selling coffee accompanied by useful little free gifts was so successful that Tchibo is now Germany's largest coffee shop and is represented on hundreds of high-streets throughout the country. The strategy has changed only slightly since the outset - and Tshibo's branches now sell an assortment of affordable household items alongside their freshly-roasted coffee beans. Plans are afoot to expand throughout Europe.
