Taking its name from the date of its foundation, the 89 Theatre was founded by East Berliners to provide an alternative to the state-run theatres of pre-reunification days. Nowadays, the theatre continues its tradition of social critique—which was 'allowed' in East German theatres and cabarets, but nowhere else.
