Fashionable Ludwig-Kirch-Straße boasts a café called Hamlet and it is ed no coincidence that one of Berlin's better known theatres is located just a stone's throw away. Built in 1962, the Freie Volksbühne (together with the Schiller-Theater used to be one of West Berlin's most important theatres. Closed in 1992 due to local government austerity measures, the theatre was reopened shortly afterwards as a privately run musical theatre. Most produtions were mediocre and the project was a failure (in contrast to the next-door Bar jeder Vernunft, which was much more successful). Plans are now afoot for the Berliner Festspiele—organiser of events such as the Berlin Film Festival, Festwochen classical music festival and the Theatertreffen theatre festival—to turn the Freie Volksbühne into its permanent home. Good news for patrons of Café Hamlet! Review © 2009, Wcities |
