The Berlin State Library houses over 10 million volumes in two buildings in the Mitte district. This expansive collection includes written work in a multitude of languages, amassing knowledge from around the world. First established in the mid 1600s, the collection was scattered across monasteries and castles across Eastern Europe during World War II. Reassembled in 1992 in new buildings constructed in the early to mid 1900s, the library is open for public use and includes departments for manuscripts, music, Eastern Europe, and East Asia. Also associated with the library is the Prussian Cultural Heritage Picture Archive located at Märkisches Ufer 16-18. Review © 2009, Wcities |
