La Alhondiga is one of the most typical and popular buildings in Bilbao. Built in 1906, by the architect, Ricardo Bastida, this singular structure was one of the first flat-roofed, reinforced concrete buildings in the city. The building, with a Catalan modernist influence, has a rectangular storey with chamfer and aligned interior naves, and was used for many years as a warehouse by many wine merchants. Great drama has been performed by some of the country's best actors in this much-loved theatre over the years. Joaquin Ruboca designed the building using the Paris Opera House as a model to which he added some Renaissance touches. Outstanding architectural features include the two polygonal towers, the grand foyer, the mezzanine, the huge windows and the rooftop terrace with views of the river, Arenal and Campo Volantín. The elegantly furnished and sumptuously decorated interior has a magnificent imperial staircase designed by Francisco Hurtado de Saracho. Getting to Mount Artxanda |

This unusual means of transport, built in 1913, by the swiss company Von Roy, was opened in 1915. Its activity was interrupted, however, during the Civil War. The present installations were opened in 1983 and the old wooden carriages were replaced with metal ones with a capacity of 70 people. The 3 minute trip, with a climb of 226 metres, allows the passenger to contemplate the beautiful city panorama, as well as to enjoy one of the most frequented recreational sites in Bilbao at weekends: Mount Artxanda. Close to the San Antón bridge and church and near what used to be the old Hospital de Atxuri (a building in the neo-classical style which today houses the Escuela de Artes y Oficios, and the Grupo Escolar del Maestro García Ribero), is located Atxuri station, from which one can travel to San Sebastián, Durango or Bermeo, among other destinations. This train terminus built in 1912 by the architect, Manuel María de Smith, is notable for its combination of Basque and highland architecture. Oldest bank building in city |

On one side of San Nicolas church, near the El Arenal byway, is found the bank building considered the oldest in the Vizcayan capital, the "Banco de Bilbao". It is a building in the French style, with a combination of classical and Baroque lines, built between 1868 and 1898, which started out in business in 1857 at its original headquarters in Viuda de Epalza street. The result today is a beautiful building whose interior is worth a visit in order to admire the central courtyard and impressive and fabulous staircase leading to the first floor. This cultural centre houses within its walls an interesting treasure: The City Puppetry Arts Centre. The aim of this social centre is to promote puppetry theatre, and it sponsors various services and activities: It has a permanent collection of more than 300 puppets with a wide range of styles, origins and fabrication techniques. At the same time, it sponsors two temporary exhibitions every year on puppets or related subjects. They also have an impressive archive on puppetry arts and they organise seminars, round-table discussions, conferences and small theatre productions, as well as workshops on creating and developing puppets. Some of the other activities worth noting include, the poster competitions for the Bilbao Carnaval and the Semana Grande (Aste Nagusia) or Big Week festival which are on display in the exhibition hall. In 1974, Dr. José Luis Goti Iturriaga, then head of the Bilbao Medical Science Academy, was a strong advocate of creating a medical museum. Five years later, the Medicine and Sciences Museum was inaugurated on the Universidad del País Vasco (only 12km from Bilbao). The collection includes more than 8,000 tools and devices used in cardiology, ophthalmology, radiology, etc. An old operating room, lab and office. Within the popular district of Bilbao known as Basurto, the Basurto Hospital, opened in 1908, replaced the Hospital de Atxur whose neoclassical building was deemed inadequate after the second Carlist War. The Basurto Hospital, built by the architect, Enrique Epalza, was a hospital design that broke the norm of neoclassical hierarchical organization, combining European fashions and advances of the time. Organized in blocks, the formal expression of the bricks coincides with modernist touches and references to the Viennese architecture of the era. Each block has a medical speciality and functions independently. This eclectically designed building, built by Severino Achucarro in 1888, was initially home to the historic and liberal Society called "El Sitio". That was until 1937, when it was taken over by General Franco's government and later sold to the Bilbao Council. Its ballroom, today a lecture hall, located on the top floor, regularly hosts concerts and conferences. Opposite this area is a place called The Daily Life Room, which houses all the very latest publications. On the floor below is found the main study and reference room, next to a smaller one used for exhibitions. This library, through whose doors some of the most renowned personalities of European cultural life have passed, is not out of touch with modern times and has a computer room on the ground floor which anyone can use freely to surf the net. Opened in 1892, the building that houses Bilbao's city council is the work of the architect Joaquin Rucoba, who also built the Arriaga Theatre. Among its principal features is a main exterior wall lavishly decorated in the Baroque style. The busts and statues adorning the place are of illustrious personages of the Bilbaon social scene. It was built upon the ruins of the old San Agustin convent. Climbing the exterior steps and entering the building, the first thing that stands out is the central staircase which meets with the most attention-grabbing spot in the town hall - the beautiful and singular Arab salon or reception area. This is a place of unusual beauty in which the main public acts take place. Located on the estuary's edge, opposite there is a bridge of the same name which crosses the estuary in the direction of Plaza Circular. Without leaving the town hall's pavement the visitor can get on to the Campo Volantín, or on to the other side of the estuary to walk along the recently opened Paseo de Urbitarte. Opening in October 1997, it's first exhibit included over 250 examples of cubist, futurist, constructivist and other 20th-century art movements. There's a permanent collection of late 20th-century art featuring more of the century's best creative talents including young Basque and Spanish artists. Frank O. Gerhy designed this complex with its spectacular curtains of glass, stone curves, titanium and glass walls, walkways hanging from the ceiling, transparent elevators and immense open spaces. Climbing from the the Arenal bridge and walking to the calle Navarra, we come across the distinguished building which has been declared of cultural interest and houses one of the most select private clubs in the Vizcayan capital, created in 1839. In its beginnings, La Sociedad Bilbaína had its headquarters in Plaza Nueva, but in 1913 it moved to its present site. This building with its emblematic facade and large bay windows, was built by Emiliano Amnan. Founded as a place of relaxation and recreation in the purest European style of the time, this magnificent club has one of the most important private libraries in Spain, containing more than 40,000 volumes, including incunabula. This outstanding building is opulently decorated inside, and some of the most important personalities in the areas of economics, finance and culture have passed through its doors. This Museo Taurino was inaugurated in 1995 in the most appropriate place: the Vista Alegre Bullring. The permanent collection is a great way to find out about the most important eras and events in bullfighting history in Bilbao and Vizcaya, as well. They have on display, a great selection of bullfighting outfits, capes, swords and other tools used by famous matadors. The most famous bulls are also remembered here with their mounted heads. There's also a wonderful display of bullfighting posters for corridas held in Bilbao, many of them from the 19th century. This Cathedral was constructed in the 16th century, but the exact date is uncertain. What is known is that at that time it could be seen from any street in the city, with the cloister on the west and the porch on the north west. Times change, however, and it is now somewhat hidden behind new buildings. It could be considered the foundation stone on which Bilbao was built, as the seven streets of the old city converged at the Cathedral, which dates back to the time of St. James, before the city was built. The Church of the Incarnation is located in the old part of the city, where farmers growing vegetables and the local chacoli wine grape used to thrive. It was also once the gateway to the Way of St. James. Construction was started by local people in the 16th century (precise date unknown). It was at first a little monastery in the Calle Somera, housing 29 monks, who moved to the Convento de la Encarnacion, in Atxuri. The building was completed in 1523, but was not at first accepted by the the secular clergy nor the nobility of Bilbao. You can visit the church and hear Mass there. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Among the notable buildings around the Plaza Moyúa, halfway down Bilbao's Gran Vía, is the Palacio de Chávarri. This is a beautiful building by Belgian architect, Paul Ankar, constructed in 1889 as a commission for businessman, Víctor Chávarri, who wanted it as a residence. The Palacio de Chávarri is built in a Flemish neorealist style, and is considered one of the most unusual examples of its kind in the city. The combination of colours and formal features result in a beautiful building that today houses the Gobierno Civil de Vizcaya (Biscay Civil Government). Combined chapel, convent and school |

As its name suggests, this building was originally a convent belonging to Augustinian nuns, located on the outskirts of Bilbao, which has not changed, and has been maintained in excellent condition. The surroundings have changed, however. It is a rectangular shape which becomes L-shaped by the Begoña steps. It is currently a convent and school, with a chapel and internal gardens, which still have their original stone. It can be reached by taking some steps from the Calle de la Esperanza up to the first floor of the convent. There are no Masses there at the moment, but there are still some services in the chapel. The University of Deusto, the educational work of the Jesuits, is situated opposite the Bilbao estuary and the Guggenheim Museum, and it is comprised of various buildings, among which the Deusto Business School stands out. This was built by the architects, Emiliano Amann and José María Basterra, in 1921. It is a building whose facade has neoclassical lines. The building that houses the Deusto school of Literature was built in 1886 by Francisco de Cubas and José María Basterra. The floors are organised from two cloisters in a double trident scheme. The former Encarnación Convent is next to the church by the same name, darkened with the pass of time. This convent, and now museum, was founded by the Dominican religious order in 1515. As well as being a closed convent, many members of renowned families from Bilbao are buried here, and it has served as a military garrison during various wars. The museum opened in 1995 after City Hall ceded the building to the Diocese and the Vizcaya regional government agreed to pay for its remodelling. The reward for visiting this museum is the beautiful square cloister in the middle of the convent, with Renaissance colonnade, and a wonderfully silent and atemporal feel. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Situated in the residential municipality of Getxo and very close to the Puerto Viejo de Algorta, is the recently constructed Puerto Deportivo El Abra-Getxo (marina). These nautical sports installations mean to become the first marina in the Basque country and the best on the Cantabrian coast, attracting many people to its two very different areas. It has a shopping and recreational area with a multicinema complex that can seat up to 2,000 people, and a walkway with restaurants, cafeterias and bars; then there is an area where boats are maintained and repaired, and all kinds of nautical equipment can be bought. The museum's collection is divided into various sections and halls. On the first floor, the exhibit, "Silver work for religious ends" includes the following sections: "Introibo ad altare dei", silver work and its liturgical function; "Saint Eloy's workshop", silver work specifically from Bilbao; "Silver work in Bizkaia", which traces the evolution of this art from the Middle Ages, through the Renaissance, Barroque, Rococo, Neo-Classicism and the modern eras; and "Sacred Garments", a collection of liturgical clothing from the Renaissance to the 20th century. On the second floor, you'll find the exhibit "Manifestations of a People's Faith" which includes primarily sculptures and paintings. It's collection, "Andra Maris", is particularly noteworthy. It includes painted wood and stone images of the Virgin Mary and Christ from the 12th to the 15th centuries. Another section is "The Middle Ages, Hispanic-Flemmish and Renaissance Art" which consists of wood, stone and alabaster pieces, as well as furniture and paintings. The "17th and 18th Century Barroque" section includes paintings from this period, among which the thirteen by Lucas Jordan (1632-1705) are especially interesting. The last section is "Neo-Classicism and the Modern Era" which includes work by Asorey, Urrutia, Romero de Torres and Moisés Huerta, among others. This young park, opened in 1988, within a large expanse of land is considered the second biggest in Bilbao, after the Parque de Doña Casilda. Interesting spot in Casco Viejo |

Leaving the small square of the Catedral de Santiago and coming into Bidebarrieta street, on the left-hand side is found one of the most interesting corners in the Casco Viejo (Old Quarter): la Fuente del Perro (the Dog Fountain). This unusual and at the same time beautiful fountain, from which the street in which it is situated is named, got its name from the resemblance the three small lions that adorn its spouts bear to dogs. Conserved as one of the many fountains traditionally found in this urban centre, the Fuente del Perro, neoclassical in style with three half point arches, stands out for its drinking trough, built to resemble a paleo-Christian sarcophagus. The calle Perro (Perro Street), one of the most typical 'poteo' (social wine drinking) areas in Bilbao, has a plaque showing the level the water reached when the estuary flooded in 1983. A statue of the town's founder, Don Diego Lopéz de Haro, presides over the starting point of Bilbao's Gran Vía. This road, considered the capital's main thoroughfare, still has the stately and eclectic air of the turn of the century, when the so- called "Ensanche" (development) of Bilbao got under way. Either side of the Gran Vía is ideal for strolling and contemplating the many interesting buildings dotted along its length. Between the Plaza Circular and Plaza Moyúa, Gran Vía is a shopping and financial area where buildings like the headquarters of the Banco Bilbao. There are other buildings, such as the one that houses the Stautory Deputation of Vizcaya, or that which is home to the Civil Government, (Palacio de Chávarri). On the last stretch of Gran Vía, which culminates in the monument to the Sacred Heart, another structure of great architectural beauty stands out in the shape of the Sota House. This long thorughfare, crossed daily by thousands of drivers and pedestrians, is an area of the city that, along with the Old Quarter, has a great tradition of commerce. Of the many commercial establishments to be found in Gran Vía, two in particular stand out: one is El Corte Inglés and the other the recently arrived Marks & Spencer. It is just where one of the main roads into and out of Bilbao begins, close to the Plaza del Sagrado Corazón. Created and designed as a sanctuary for the destitute by the architect Antonio de Goicoechea, in 1871, this immense building, was opened in 1872 by Amadeo de Saboya. The building is the fruit of a combination of neo-classical features, with the lineal layout of its facades and cupolas at its corners making for a sober appearance. There is a small and peaceful park out front. Very close to La Misericordia you'll find the Athletic Club de Bilbao's football stadium, which was built in 1913. Built in 1920 by Gregorio Ibarreche, the Palacio de Ibaigane houses one of the most loved and followed institutions in Vizcaya: the headquarters of the hundred-year-old Athletic Club de Bilbao. Initially intended to be the La Sota family's residence, and later to house the Vizcayan Military Government, today this building in the style of the palaces of the first Baroque, holds within its walls the secrets of the football club supported by thousands of Vizcayans. On its facade, notice the outstanding and popularly inspired architectural motifs, the main characteristics of which are the framework of exposed brick, a short-arched entrance and the gables of the many projections. The housewife's favourite, this colourful fresh produce market sells meat, fish, fruit, vegetables and other local goods. Climbing from the Casco Viejo (Old Quarter) through the Calzadas de Mallona we reach what was in the past one of the most important religious architectural features of Bilbao. Of the old cemetery all that remains today is the arched entrance, which features Doric intercolumniation and was built by Juan Benavista in 1828. Upon it there is an inscription which reads "Here ends the pleasure of the unjust and begins the glory of the good". Today the cemetery's grounds are occupied by a football pitch (Mallona's), and by a landscaped area that connects with the Echevarria Park. This building was formerly a convent located on the left bank of the river, near a bridge and a street of the same name, La Merced. It stopped being a place of worship because it was in such a bad state of repair. In 1989 it was turned into a public building by the Bilbao city council. The following year it became a multi-purpose cultural centre, giving it some importance as a provider of culture along with the Teatro Arriaga and others. It also has daily Masses. It is a Baroque building, which has had a lot of work done on it. Upstairs is now the headquarters of the department responsible for restoring the old part of the city, and the downstairs is used for theatrical performances and cultural activities. Declared an Historic-Artistic monument, this building, constructed between 1901-1904, is popularly known as "Casa de Gaudí" on account of its resemblance to the Catalan artist's work. In its striking facade, there are many bay windows on the corner of the building with ledges in carved stone and wrought iron. Its four habitable apartments are today living quarters and offices. Created in 1927, this old museum exhibits full-size reproductions of original sculptures in plaster, of some of the best known works in the history of Art. The museum is well-known among artists and painters in Bilbao, as a lot of them have been there for drawing, painting and modelling lessons from Manu, dubbed 'El Ruso', who needs no introduction. A good way to get to know a community is buy investigating its roots. This museum, commonly known as the Basque Museum, is the right place for this endeavour. The permanent collection is dedicated to Prehistoric times and Archaeology in Vizcaya province and the Ethnography and History of the Basque Country. In the Pre-History section, special emphasis is placed on the ancient world of trade, old tools, early fabric-weaving, ceramics, weapon making and furniture. The Basque Sea hall is livened up by fun sound effects: shrill seagulls and furious waves. The Pastoral Culture hall, with bleating sheep and clanging cowbells in the background, will take you back in time. Finally, the Consulate hall, has an incredible model of the entire Vizcaya region. The museum also organises temporary exhibits. In the shop you will find books, traditional Basque music and reproductions of items. Considered a vital thoroughfare in this industrial and commercial city, the Nervión estuary has been one of the fundamental driving forces in Bilbao's economic and historical development: quays, buildings, warehouses, factories, steelworks, all sprung up on either bank shaping an industrial landscape some 14 kilometres in length along the river's route. Today little of this development remains. In the great transformation from industrial city to a city based on services that has taken shape in Bilbao, the Nervión or Ibaizabal estuary has played a part, with two of the city's most emblematic buildings today having been been built on one of its banks: the Guggenheim Museum and the Palacio de Congresos y de la Música, or Palacio Euskalduna. The cleaning of this estuary of great character and personality will in the future allow it to shine again in all its splendour and once again occupy the place it so deserves in the town's life. A speedy trip across the bridges that mark the estuary take us from its most distant past to the very present. Setting out from the symbolic San Antón bridge, the most recent bridge we come across is the one next to the Palacio de Euskaldena, from which it takes its name. It is a modern metal structure with a roofed walkway for pedestrians. Old wash-house in modernist style |

Situated in the well-known Castaños district, just behind the beautiful Campo Volantín and on one of the Plaza de Funicular's corners, is the Mercado Antiguo (Old Market). Built by Ricardo Bastida in 1910 and clearly in the modernist style, this building that is now a market was once a wash-house. Before it was common for houses to have running water there were many wash-houses in the villages. In Bilbao, next to the Castaños market, there survives one in the calle Alameda San Mamés, built by the same architect in 1905 with the same Catalan modernist characteristics. This historic building sees daily frenetic commercial activity with the coming and going of people doing there shopping there. It is situated in one of the best known residential districts of Bilbao: the Paseo del Campo Volantín alongside the estuary. Built by the architect Julián de Zubizarreta in 1894, this palace was the residence during the 1950's for the family of José María de Olábarri, an important businessman of the time. It is an admirable building in which French and English influences meet, as, for example, in its floor designed in an L shape, with noteworthy interior proportions. Setting out from Plaza de Unamuno, begin the climb to the Begoña basilica through the paved streets of Mallona (Las Calzadas de Mallona). These are an essential part of the Day of the Virgin celebration (15 August) when thousands of people visit the shrine of this basilica. Begin the walk through these famous streets through which in bygone days marched a civic procession every May 2nd in order to commemorate the deaths of those who fell defending the town during the Siege of Bilbao. During the Carlist wars Bilbao was under siege and General Concha overthrew the siege on May 2. Presided over by the statue of Don Diego López de Haro, Lord of Vizcaya and founder of Bilbao in 1300, the Plaza Circular constitutes one of the Gran Vía's end points. The buildings surrounding this much frequented and travelled through Bilbaoan square are mostly large and provide the headquarters for the main banks and other financial institutions. Among them stands out the BBVA bank skyscraper. In the entrance of this building there is a sculpture by the Basque artist, Eduardo Chillida, and next to it one of most famous fountains in Bilbao, used daily by many as a meeting place. From the Plaza Circular and going down Navarra street you will head towards the traditional Casco Viejo (Old Quarter), in the opposite direction there is the Gran Vía, the city's main thoroughfare. The Plaza Moyúa, also known as Plaza Elíptica, divides the Gran Vía in half. It was re-opened in 1997, though the original dates back to the 1940's. Because of the metro building works, it was dismantled in 1990 to be restored and re-opened years later respecting its original design, which was based on the formalist style of French Gardens. The low boxed hedges and great variety of flowering plants are an outstanding feature. The gardens near the central fountain, alongside their neighboring buildings—the mythic Hotel Carlton and the Civil Government headquarters, the Palacio de Chávarri are also an attractive feature. It is a vital space named after one of the most significant figures within the world of literature and philosophy to have come out of Bilbao. Unamuno was born in one of the properties still preserved in popular Ronda street, near the square. Perched on top of a large column, the statue of this great Bilbaoan author - the work of Victoriano Macho - observes the daily coming and going of people. The past and the present live together in this square - close to Calzadas de Mallona - from where the roads might take us to La Cruz street, with the impressive grouping of Santos Juanes church and its cloister with the premises of the Museum of Archaeology, Ethnography and Basque History. We can also move off towards Iturribide street, one of the most typical bar areas, that becomes a recreational focal point for youngsters at weekends. To get to the Pérgola (bandstand) you have to go to the Doña Casilda Iturrizar Park, or the "Duck Park" as it is commonly known. There you find an oval plaza, surrounded by columns and rose gardens. The columns are in two styles. The first is typical of the region with brick pillars decorated with Moorish Mudejar designs, and the other is the twin columned Baroque style. The city organises a lot of open-air concerts here at the Pérgola. Every weekend you can hear classical music concerts or bands that you can dance to with a partner. You can also hear a variety of music from the various contemporary bands that come to town during the Semana Grande (Big Week) festival in August, or watch the spectacular coloured fountain. If you are in town during the Bilbao International "Tropikala" Festival, come enjoy the Caribbean and African bands and take the opportunity to learn a dance step or two from a teacher. The city of Bilbao, an obligatory stopping point for merchants, depended for many years solely on this bridge which today bears little resemblance to the one featured on the coat of arms - hump shaped with three arches and sidings where a toll was extracted. The repeated floods in the city made successive reforms necessary, though its original image was still preserved until the end of the 19th century when, due to the impossibility of its coping with the sheer weight of traffic, a new bridge was built. Next to today's bridge, dating from after the Civil War, is San Antón church, both structures typical landmarks in Bilbao. Opened on 21 August 1913 in a match between the Bilbaoan team and Irún Racing, the San Mamés ground is situated in Bilbao's suburban development (Ensanche), very close to the building known as "La Feria Internacional de Muestras de Bilbao". This mythical Bilbaoan club celebrated its centenary in 1998, a celebration in which the stadium, known locally as "the Cathedral", was the main protagonist. With a capacity of 40,000, in every match of the league San Mamés seats a multitude of fans who live and breathe for the victories of their lions, as they call the players. The stadium is a technologically impressive structure whose grand arch has become one of the city's best-known symbols. A humble little hermitage was built between the river and the old city in a fishing area as a sign to sailors that the city was not far away. The hermitage was dedicated to Saint Nicolas de Bari, patron saint of sailors. In the 15th century, thanks to funding from the people of Bilbao, construction began on another church in the Arenal, very close to the Teatro Arriaga, which is pure Baroque with very decorative towers. This is the last Gothic building constructed in Bilbao, in one of the most famous areas, the barrio de Deusto, in the 16th century. Its most significant feature is the main altar which is Renaissance style. It has had a number of alterations to make it fit in with its surroundings. The best example of this dates back to the 1970s, when the original church had an extension built in concrete, metal and glass, which hides the artistic value of this old church. This Basilica is located in Portugalete, a coastal town, fifteen minutes from Bilbao, where you can go to see El Puente Colgante, a suspension bridge, as well as this work of art, the Basilica, which has been declared a national Basque monument. It was erected in the 15th century by Doña María López de Haro and took almost 100 years to build. It is in Gothic style, which can be fully appreciated from the outside, as you can see the big high windows with pointed arches, the buttresses, and the flying buttresses. Inside it has strong columns with ribs leaning against the vaults, and a little triforium of arches which are reminiscent of the old pilgrims' churches. Situated just opposite the Arriaga theatre, the Santander Railway Station is one of the clearest examples of the Ensanche plan. This was carried out in Bilbao at the end of the 19th century and made the city a place of contrasts where the old (Casco Viejo) met with the new (El Ensanche - suburban development). This station was opened in 1902, although its design was the work of Severino Achúcarro in 1898. It has a curious composition, with the station on top of a hall which is crossed by a viaduct. It is a structure inspired by the first English stations of the time. Subjected to various restyling, the most recent undertaken by the architect, Yago Bonet Correa, the recuperation of original features has been sought, as well as the incorporation of new facilities such as the exhibition hall and cafeteria situated in the vestibule. In Gran Vía, between Plaza Moyúa and Sagrado Corazón, is a grand structure built in 1919 and occupied by the Sota family during its early days. One striking feature this magnificent building has (an early example of luxurious residential architecture in 19th century Bilbao) is its facade, with towers, arched galleries, pronounced eaves, turrets and pinnacles. It is a clear example of the regionalist tendencies and mountain influences that are evident in its creator's earlier work, the Atxuri station. Social drawing rooms and rooms formerly designed as family quarters are today partly used to house various offices. On the ground floor of the building are several important fashion outlets. This church is located in the Calle de la Cruz which used to be the street where all the other streets in the old part of the city converged. It was built in 1614, and was designed by Martinez Ibañez de Zalbidea. The style of this artistic monument is Biscayan Baroque, and the materials used were sandstone carved by stonemasons. Impressive Deputation of Vizcaya building |

In the stretch between Plaza Circular and Plaza Moyúa, the majestic presence of a building that today houses the Statutory Deputation of Biscay stands out. The Deputation's first headquarters was in the Plaza Nueva of the Casco Viejo (the Old Quarter's) until 1900, when it moved to its present site. Built in 1897 by the architect, Luis Aladrán, this building combines several styles, with Renaissance being the most predominant. Within the generously decorated facade, its intricate stonework is an interesting feature. The Taberna de los Mundos created the Espacio de los Mundos in September 1995, to exhibit quality photographs. The formats, supports, themes and authors are all very different. Styles have ranged from classic black and white and color photography to micro-photography and many more. Featured photographers have included prize-winning and renowned artists such as Fausto Grossi, Juan Angel Arrieta, and Erika Baraona, the official photographer of the Guggenheim Bilbao Museum. The Espacio de los Mundos also organises two or three-month long exhibits dedicated to promising new artists. But, along with these exhibits, they also organize seminars, literary conferences, slide shows and audiovisual presentations on the faraway countries visited. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This large bullring that can hold 15,000 spectators was designed by the architect Luis Maria Gana in 1962. It burned down in 1961 and afterwards was completely restored to the arena we see today. Clearly neo-Mudejar in style, the arena begins its season in March and ends at the end of September or beginning of October. Notorious for being very demanding with its bullfighters and animals, the Plaza reaches its climax during the Semana Grande, Bilboan fiestas, when the best fighters and best-bred bulls in Spain make for a magnificent spectacle that, enthralls the huge public that fills the plaza each day. Built in 1927, basically in the Baroque style, this urban palace adapts its trapezoidal floor to a corner of what was the old wall surrounding the old quarter. Refurbished by the architects, Pedro María Basañez and Alberto Sanz after its acquisition by the Council of Bilbao, in the interior what stands out is the free design of the levels, twisting around a small central triangular courtyard which becomes the main feature of the building.
