Religious Art of Vizcaya |
Plaza de la Encarnación, 9-B Bilbao 48006 +34 94 432 0125 elizmuseoa@euskalnet.net |
The former Encarnación Convent is next to the church by the same name, darkened with the pass of time. This convent, and now museum, was founded by the Dominican religious order in 1515. As well as being a closed convent, many members of renowned families from Bilbao are buried here, and it has served as a military garrison during various wars. The museum opened in 1995 after City Hall ceded the building to the Diocese and the Vizcaya regional government agreed to pay for its remodelling. The reward for visiting this museum is the beautiful square cloister in the middle of the convent, with Renaissance colonnade, and a wonderfully silent and atemporal feel. Life and habits |
Herriko Plaza, 1 Artea-Arratia 48142 +34 94 631 7086 |
This museum is situated in a picturesque setting, off Nacional 240 motorway (Bilbao-Vitoria-Gasteiz), km 26. The building is meant to resemble a typical Basque country-house from the 16th century. For centuries, the Basque country-houses were entirely self-sufficient, a fundamental factor behind Basque wealth and culture. The purpose of this museum, then, is to depict the habits and life of the Basque villagers, from those days. The permanent collection of this ecomuseum consists of 700 antique items, both inside the house and outside in the surrounding garden. You'll find the bedrooms and the kitchen, as well as everyday items, including traditional medicines, wool, tools, carpintry items and a selection of equipment used for tilling the land, harvesting and transport. There's a carvery and tavern to eat in and a shop selling books, ecological products and crafts on the ground floor. Entrance: (EUR 1.80); children and groups (with prior appointment), (EUR 1.20) Review © 2007, Wcities |
Well-known classical sculpture |
Conde Mirasol, s/n Bilbao 48003 +34 94 415 7673 |
Created in 1927, this old museum exhibits full-size reproductions of original sculptures in plaster, of some of the best known works in the history of Art. The collections range from Ancient Art (Mesopotamic and Egyptian civilisations) to Classic Art (ancient Greek, Classical, Helenic and Renaissance). The museum is well-known among artists and painters in Bilbao, as a lot of them have been there for drawing, painting and modelling lessons from Manu, dubbed 'El Ruso', who needs no introduction. The museum also has a video library and a photographic laboratory. In the audiovisual room you can learn to sculpt using the 'grafting' method. It is currently closed for repairs and there is speculation that the museum may be relocated. Review © 2007, Wcities |
