Getting to Mount Artxanda |
Carretera de Artxanda a Santo Domingo, nº 27 Bilbao, Vizcaya 48015 Spain +34 (0)944 45 4966 http://www.funicularartxanda.com/ |
This unusual means of transport, built in 1913, by the swiss company Von Roy, was opened in 1915. Its activity was interrupted, however, during the Civil War. The present installations were opened in 1983 and the old wooden carriages were replaced with metal ones with a capacity of 70 people. The 3 minute trip, with a climb of 226 metres, allows the passenger to contemplate the beautiful city panorama, as well as to enjoy one of the most frequented recreational sites in Bilbao at weekends: Mount Artxanda. Here you have some of the best known restaurants and grills in Bilbao, as well as the Artxanda Sports Centre. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Up and Away |
Esperanza, 6 Bilbao 48005 Spain |
Situated in La Esperanza street, just behind San Nicolas de Bari church, the Begona elevator stands out within the urban aesthetic of Bilbao's old quarter (Casco Viejo). Built in 1949 by the architect Rafael Frontan this unusual means of transport takes us from the lowest to the highest point of the city in a very short time. We can take advantage of this trip to go to the Basilica or Our Lay of Begona or look over to Echevarria. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Enormous iron bridge |
Plaza Subiko, s/n Bilbao 48990 Spain +1 34 94 480 1012 |
This huge iron bridge and transport platform bears a striking resemblence to the Eiffel Tower in Paris. It links the two districts of Portugalete and Getxo by spanning the 160m of river separating them. You can take a trip on the elevator and walk along the platform 163m above the water to get some excellent views. It was built between 1890 and 1893 by architect Alberto Palacios who was also responsible for Madrid's famous Atocha station. Guides accompany visits up the elevators and it costs 500 ptas (EUR 3). The structure is an official architectural heritage site. Review © 2007, Wcities |
