A breathing space |
Cerca de Palacio de Congresos Euskalduna Bilbao, Vizcaya 48011 +34 944 71 0301 (Informacion Turistica) informacion@bilbaoturismo.bilbao.net |
You'll find this park alongside Bilbao's Gran Vía and you can escape from the traffic to spend some peaceful time walking along the pathways amongst an amazing diversity of majestic trees. It was laid out between 1912 and 1920 along the lines of an English country house gardens and it boasts four ponds. The most popular are the duck pond and the pergola pond, with its spectacular cybernetic fountain that's a veritable sound and light show. Next door, you can visit the impressive Museo de Bellas Artes (Fine Arts Museum). Review © 2007, Wcities |

Big natural space |
Txurdinaga Bilbao 48004 |
This young park, opened in 1988, within a large expanse of land is considered the second biggest in Bilbao, after the Parque de Doña Casilda. It has various sculptures that represent the spirit of the union between different European peoples, an example of which is the Piedra de la Amistad (the Friendship Stone), a gift from the Count of Hampshire. There is a roller skating track and a frontón (wall for playing squash- like Basque game against). Also, near one of the park's entrances, is the Txurdinaga Multisports Complex. It is opened 24 hours. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Old Bilbao cemetery |
Calzadas de Mallona Bilbao 48006 |
Climbing from the Casco Viejo (Old Quarter) through the Calzadas de Mallona we reach what was in the past one of the most important religious architectural features of Bilbao. Of the old cemetery all that remains today is the arched entrance, which features Doric intercolumniation and was built by Juan Benavista in 1828. Upon it there is an inscription which reads "Here ends the pleaure of the unjust and begins the glory of the good". Today the cemetery's grounds are occupied by a football pitch (Mallona's), and by a landscaped area that connects with the Echevarria Park. The Vista Alegre cemetery, in the Derio municipality, is today the principal resting place for the city and its surrounding areas. Review © 2007, Wcities |

In Casco Viejo |
San Nicholas de Bari Bilbao 48005 |
This recreational area gets its name from the fact that it was formed years ago by mud flats that, over time, became dry land alongside the estuary. Many sailors reached the banks of this wharf, because of which San Nicolás de Bari (patron saint of sailors) hermitage was built. It was converted into a temple in 1940 and today is perhaps considered one of the best known churches in Bilbao. Along the banks of the estuary the "Kiosko de la Música" stands out. It dates from 1942 and has been restored. Every Sunday morning the Municipal Band gives concerts for the pleasure of all those who come here to relax in this peaceful and festive space. Pebbled walkways, splendid banana and lime trees, bear witness to the many cultural activities organized in what has been converted into a beautiful and central point in Bilbao's fiestas. From here you can admire the Arriaga Theatre, the oldest in Bilbao. Review © 2007, Wcities |

In Doña Casilda Park |
Parque Doña Casilda Iturrizar Bilbao, Vizcaya 48011 +34 (0)944 71 0301 (Información Turística) |
To get to the Pérgola (bandstand) you have to go to the Doña Casilda Iturrizar Park, or the "Duck Park" as it is commonly known. There you find an oval plaza, surrounded by columns and rose gardens. The columns are in two styles. The first is typical of the region with brick pillars decorated with Moorish Mudejar designs, and the other is the twin columned Baroque style. The city organises a lot of open-air concerts here at the Pérgola. Every weekend you can hear classical music concerts or bands that you can dance to with a partner. You can also hear a variety of music from the various contemporary bands that come to town during Semana Grande (Big Week) festival in August or watch the spectacular coloured fountain. If you are in town during the Bilbao International "Tropikala" Festival, come enjoy the Caribbean and African bands and take the opportunity to learn a dance step or two from a teacher.
