Popular and traditional |
Paseo de El Arenal / Plaza Nueva Bilbao 48005 Spain |
Visit Plaza Nueva and El Arenal on December 21 to experience this lively traditional country market festival. Hundreds of stalls are set up to sell to the best quality rural produce the region can supply, including delicious sausages, black pudding, txakoli (white wine) and cider. There's always a festive atmosphere, encouraged by strolling musicians playing traditional instruments. This colourful event dates back to the end of the 19th century, when the baserritarras (villagers) used to come to town to pay the landlords their rent and took advantage of the occasion to sell their home-produced goods. Apart from the outdoor bars, the main attraction is the raffle, with the prize being a pig. Review © 2007, Wcities |
