Shopping, dining and entertainment
70 Hurst Street
Birmingham B5 4TD

This is more than a shopping centre, it's also something of an entertainment complex. A multiplex cinema, various restaurants and an increasing number of bars and pubs are found here. Most shops deal in fashionably retro clothing and there are a couple of expensive hairdressers too. This is a rewarding place to go for a drink if you are on your way to the Hippodrome, or even if you are just out for an evening stroll around the city centre.

There is 100p in every pound (£). Notes come in GBP5, GBP10, GBP20 and GBP50, and coins in 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p, 50p, GBP1 and GBP2. Plastic/Traveller's Cheques. Nearly all banks have cashpoint facilities (ATMs), which can be accessed 24 hours a day. Gladrags

Fashion on the cheap
3 Ethel Street
Birmingham B2 4BG
United Kingdom
Gladrags is a small second-hand womens-wear shop where you can pick up an outfit for under a tenner. Admittedly, some of the stock obviously belongs to a different decade, but there are some contemporary designer labels that just have minor flaws. If you're prepared to hunt around you might well find just the thing for that special bash. It's in a good location off New Street, in the shopping heart of the city. A paradise for the thrifty and keen-eyed.

This established jewelery shop is one of the best known names in the UK. As well as a wide range of modern jewelery there is a gift range of quality items including collectibles designed to be antiques of the future. This is one of two branches in the city. The intention is to enable jewelery to be purchased for every budget, and because of this some people sneer at its mass market appeal but H Samuel is a deservedly popular chain.

His Master's Voice, as the company used to be known, has been going for years now but this flagship Birmingham branch is all very state of the art. Sprawled over four floors, with some of those on different levels, you'll need to use the floor plans to find whatever tape, CD, video or Britney merchandise you're looking for. A huge amount of acts and artists is represented, but it's still difficult to get anything too alternative, leftfield or independent.

But the world is a better place for it, and although you won't find many bargains here you will get that personal touch. The jewellery industry developed in Birmingham from the mid-19th century. At its peak in the early part of the 20th century it employed 20,000 workers. World War II brought recession and although redevelopment took place in the area, by 1985 there were only 4,000 people employed in the district. Today, the Jewellery Quarter is a bustling area that produces over a third of the UK's jewellery, and you can find tonnes of bargains in its many small shops. It's also home to the award-winning Museum of the Jewellery Quarter and some good restaurants.

Marks and Spencer (M&S) is practically an institution in Britain. The appeal of the chain lies in its conservative approach combined with quality and value, although recently the chain has had difficulty keeping its core customers happy and clothes sales have slumped. This is a large store, with an excellent food hall and wine shop downstairs, and has tried hard in recent times to update its image. The "autograph" range of designer clothing on the first floor is testament to this.

Pickles Pantry

Cupboard of delights
2-4 Lonsdale Road
Birmingham B17 9RA
United Kingdom
This fantastic little deli is hidden away in a side street, next door to an organic fruit and veg place and an excellent butcher's. It's only small, but sells an enviable range of cheeses—many organic and most quite rare—as well as hams, fresh bread, preserves, wines, pastries and the eponymous pickles. Everything is deliciously tasty and certainly worth the little extra you'll have to pay.

There is probably nowhere else in town where you can buy a real 17th century tiara from such an unusual collection of jewelery. However, this level of quality does not come cheap of course.

Taxis

Getting about
All over the city
Birmingham, West Midlands
United Kingdom
Taxis in Birmingham are plentiful, with a myriad of black cab and minicab companies plying their trade. Black cabs can be booked in advance or hailed on the street if they have their "Taxi" sign lit up. Minicabs must be booked in advance, but will be a little cheaper - it is illegal for them to pick up fares without a prior booking. In the city centre there are a number of large taxi ranks - good bets are outside New Street train station and at the Arcadian Centre on Hurst Street. With black cabs, fares increase after midnight and extra is charged for luggage. Typically, minicabs are licensed to carry up to four passengers, with seating for five in black cabs.

Train travel - General

Birmingham trains and stations
Birmingham, West Midlands
United Kingdom
Birmingham has one of the country's most used train stations, owing to its location at the heart of the rail network. Birmingham New Street has 12 platforms with services running from around 6am to 11:30p, and millions of passengers either begin or end their journey here every year. There is a large taxi rank at the front of the station a bus stop just outside the entrance. The other principal stations in the city centre are Snow Hill, which is 10 minutes' walk to the north, and Moor Street, the same distance to the east. These provide local services to smaller towns such as Stratford and Warwick and are also prime commuter destinations. The main companies running trains out of New Street are Virgin for cross-country destinations, Silverlink for stations to London (a cheaper if less speedy option than Virgin) and Centro, which provides local services.

Special daysaver tickets can also be bought from the drivers. T

High Street emporium
29 Union Street
Birmingham B4 7SL
United Kingdom
+44 121 631 3303
http://www.whsmith.co.uk
Smith's, although losing popularity in recent years, remains a mainstay of high street shopping life in Britain. It's a life-saver when it comes to buying last minute cards and presents and usually first port of call for students needing good, cheap stationery. Of course, it deals in much more besides. Smith's sells an excellent range of books, many at discounted prices, and is great for music as long as you're not after anything too obscure. Games, toys and puzzles, calendars, newspapers, magazines, and videos are also sold. The only problem with this store is that it may be a little too big, so it takes a while to get from one area to another, but that's hardly reason to forgo this national institution.
