Taxis in Birmingham are plentiful, with a myriad of black cab and minicab companies plying their trade. Black cabs can be booked in advance or hailed on the street if they have their "Taxi" sign lit up. Minicabs must be booked in advance, but will be a little cheaper - it is illegal for them to pick up fares without a prior booking. In the city centre there are a number of large taxi ranks - good bets are outside New Street train station and at the Arcadian Centre on Hurst Street. With black cabs, fares increase after midnight and extra is charged for luggage. Typically, minicabs are licensed to carry up to four passengers, with seating for five in black cabs. Birmingham has one of the country's most used train stations, owing to its location at the heart of the rail network. Birmingham New Street has 12 platforms with services running from around 6am to 11:30p, and millions of passengers either begin or end their journey here every year. There is a large taxi rank at the front of the station a bus stop just outside the entrance. The other principal stations in the city centre are Snow Hill, which is 10 minutes' walk to the north, and Moor Street, the same distance to the east. These provide local services to smaller towns such as Stratford and Warwick and are also prime commuter destinations. The main companies running trains out of New Street are Virgin for cross-country destinations, Silverlink for stations to London (a cheaper if less speedy option than Virgin) and Centro, which provides local services. Games, toys and puzzles, calendars, newspapers, magazines, and videos are also sold. The only problem with this store is that it may be a little too big, so it takes a while to get from one area to another, but that's hardly reason to forgo this national institution.
