Shopping, dining and entertainment |
70 Hurst Street Birmingham B5 4TD United Kingdom +44 121 622 5348 |
This is more than a shopping centre, it's also something of an entertainment complex. A multiplex cinema, various restaurants and an increasing number of bars and pubs are found here. Most shops deal in fashionably retro clothing and there are a couple of expensive hairdressers too. This is a rewarding place to go for a drink if you are on your way to the Hippodrome, or even if you are just out for an evening stroll around the city centre. Review © 2007, Wcities |

60 Corporation Street Birmingham B2 4UQ United Kingdom |
A large and modern menswear store that deals in smart and smart casual goods at affordable prices. You won't find any designer names here, but the quality is still of a high standard. 8-9 Lower Temple Street Birmingham B2 4JD United Kingdom +44 121 632 5575 http://www.diesel.com |
The extremely trendy Diesel has branches in all the major cities in the world and the Birmingham store is a must for any fashion conscious person on a clothes buying spree. It specialises in the casual, youth end of the market but with a designer appeal to its range. Some items can be a bit pricey but as any fashion junkie will tell you, you have to pay the price to look the part. The staff are all very friendly and the less hip are unlikely to feel as intimidated as in many other fashionable stores. There is also a Playstation by the front door for those tired of waiting for someone to try on yet another pair of trousers. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This city center music shop stocks a large collection of new and used vinyl albums, cassettes and CDs, and is noted for its wide selection of jazz artists. A large, rambling, obviously well-loved store, it's worth visiting just to see that so much vinyl is still in existence in these days of soulless CDs. Second-hand and antique furniture, pictures and toys are also sold, giving the place an even more eclectic feel. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Gladrags is a small second-hand womens-wear shop where you can pick up an outfit for under a tenner. His Master's Voice, as the company used to be known, has been going for years now but this flagship Birmingham branch is all very state of the art. Comfy footwear |

This shop takes its name from Kendal, where the company had its first store in 1842 - a measure of its enduring popularity. This well-known high street store is found on the lower ground floor of the Pavilions and is large enough for customers to browse in comfort. The company was in serious trouble a few years ago, but things have picked up since with a more modern, fashion-conscious range for the younger professional woman bringing in more trade. The floral print and lady of leisure items remain in limited numbers, as do country house-style soft furnishings, but it's an altogether less fuddy-duddy experience than before. A Great British institution |
42 High Street Birmingham B4 7SL United Kingdom +44 121 643 4511 http://www.marksandspencer.com |
Marks and Spencer (M&S) is practically an institution in Britain. The appeal of the chain lies in its conservative approach combined with quality and value, although recently the chain has had difficulty keeping its core customers happy and clothes sales have slumped. This is a large store, with an excellent food hall and wine shop downstairs, and has tried hard in recent times to update its image. The "autograph" range of designer clothing on the first floor is testament to this. Review © 2007, Wcities |

One of the company's smaller outlets, and a bit cluttered over the two floors here because of lack of space, Monsoon offers more alternative garb than Next (next door). That said, it is still relatively mainstream in its range. It sells more formal and evening wear than day-to-day clothes, and these are usually good quality if a bit pricey. The store also caters for the larger man with a good selection of outsize garments. Not what you'd call happening gear, but quality is guaranteed and prices are very reasonable. Aladdin's cave of gifts |
14-16 New Street Birmingham B2 4HD United Kingdom +44 121 643 8405 |
Smithsonia is a superb, friendly and unimposing gift shop in the eclectic Piccadilly Arcade. It sells silver jewellery, prints, frames, clocks, ornaments and art deco curios, all at favourably realistic prices. There are lots of Charles Rennie Mackintosh-inspired pieces and a fine range of earrings. All the merchandise is either innovative or interesting, or both, and it'll be a surprise if nothing takes your fancy. Ideal for buying impetuous gifts, whether for a friend or yourself. Spaced out Internet pub |
Temple Street Birmingham B2 5DB United Kingdom +44 121 643 0426 |
Hardly eye-catching from the outside, and trapped in the anonymity of a side street linking New Street to the Cathedral, this is still one of the centre's more distinctive bars. Its happy hour lasts pretty much all day, video screens abound and there's even internet connection for Joe Public during the day. For lovers of things more jiggy, there are DJs every night playing mostly indie beats. All in all, the place attracts quite a mixed clientele. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Rags and riches |
Edgbaston Street Bull Ring Birmingham B5 4RB United Kingdom +44 121 303 0300 |
This is the new name for what was the old Rag Market, and it remains a great place to find bargains. The market is only open three days a week, holds 350 stalls and sells material and trimmings at cheap prices. Other goods on offer include carpets, rugs, clothes and household items. The market is always extremely busy at the weekends and is popular amongst the students for its cheap and trendy second-hand clothing. There is a well-stocked haberdashery section too. This is an area where you'll find a complete fusion of cultures - a place that has to be visited. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Excellent mix of tunes |
Bull Street Birmingham B4 6AB United Kingdom +44 121 236 9170 |
Rated as one of Birmingham's best record shops by those who know, Tempest supplies the latest tunes in the house, soul, reggae, indie, techno, mainstream pop and hip hop vein. In fact, if Tempest does not have what you want then staff can order it in for you, no worries. The shop is relatively easy to find, located between Corporation Street and Colmore Row. To use the modern argot, it's a tasty record shack with tunes that drop like a bomb. Review © 2007, Wcities |

High Street emporium |
29 Union Street Birmingham B4 7SL United Kingdom +44 121 631 3303 http://www.whsmith.co.uk |
Smith's, although losing popularity in recent years, remains a mainstay of high street shopping life in Britain. It's a life-saver when it comes to buying last minute cards and presents and usually first port of call for students needing good, cheap stationery. Of course, it deals in much more besides. Smith's sells an excellent range of books, many at discounted prices, and is great for music as long as you're not after anything too obscure. Games, toys and puzzles, calendars, newspapers, magazines, and videos are also sold. The only problem with this store is that it may be a little too big, so it takes a while to get from one area to another, but that's hardly reason to forgo this national institution. Flash watches |
124 New Street Birmingham B2 4JH United Kingdom |
Hoping to cash in on the fact that hundreds of high rollers and big spenders are ensconced in the expensive hotel rooms of the Burlington Hotel above, this is a very high quality watch shop. Rolex, Gucci, Tag Heuer...all the big names are here, but of course all of them come at a price. The interior is reserved and serious, and floorwalkers give every impression of being able to spot timewasters. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Well-known booksellers |
24 – 26 High Street Birmingham B4 7SL United Kingdom +44 121 633 4353 |
After a major refurbishment, this Waterstone's is now back and better than ever. It holds over 150,000 titles on its six floors, guarantees to find you any book in print and will try its damnest to get you any book which is not. The lifts now talk to you, there's a book garden, Coffee Republic has opened a small cafe on the first floor and the whole monster-sized building is lighter and airier than before. It seems this Waterstone's has regained its position as the best bookshop in Birmingham. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Punning bookstore |
High Street Birmingham B4 7SL United Kingdom +44 121 643 2877 |
Not nearly as grand as nearby Waterstone's, but then The Works is after a different type of customer altogether. It sells principally discounted titles at genuinely bargain prices, though you won't find too many current bestsellers here. It's good for gifts and also sells wrapping paper and cards. Children's and cookery books are best represented, but there's also a decent range of both classic and low-brow fiction. Review © 2007, Wcities |
