DJs delight - and vinyl only |
9 Piccadilly Arcade Birmingham, West Midlands B2 4HD United Kingdom +44 121 643 6045 |
The Depot is a record shop dedicated solely to vinyl and unlike most specialist stores, it is situated right in the heart of the city. There is an array of turntables on the counter for DJs and other 12 inch obsessives to sample the goods and the staff are all muso enough to know their big beat from progressive house. There's also a good selection of record bags and other accessories to tempt you while you're there. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Get into the groove |
99-101 Bromsgrove Street Birmingham B5 6PY United Kingdom +44 121 622 2219 |
This city center music shop stocks a large collection of new and used vinyl albums, cassettes and CDs, and is noted for its wide selection of jazz artists. A large, rambling, obviously well-loved store, it's worth visiting just to see that so much vinyl is still in existence in these days of soulless CDs. Second-hand and antique furniture, pictures and toys are also sold, giving the place an even more eclectic feel. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Large and popular music store |
38 High Street Birmingham B4 7SL United Kingdom +44 121 643 2177 http://www.hmv.co.uk |
His Master's Voice, as the company used to be known, has been going for years now but this flagship Birmingham branch is all very state of the art. Sprawled over four floors, with some of those on different levels, you'll need to use the floor plans to find whatever tape, CD, video or Britney merchandise you're looking for. A huge amount of acts and artists is represented, but it's still difficult to get anything too alternative, leftfield or independent. Review © 2007, Wcities |

For rare and sought-after vinyl |
Vinyl House 10 upper Gough Street Birmingham B1 1JG United Kingdom +44 121 687 7777 http://www.htfr.com |
This store is called Hard to Find because the helpful staff take pride in their ability to locate records that tend to be, well...hard to find. The shop specialises in old school, house, garage, drum n bass, electro and hip hop. They have around 50,000 records in stock and, just like the larger megastores, you have the chance to listen to the tracks before you buy. A free copy of the store's 88 page catalogue can be ordered from its informative web site. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Writing style |
14-15 Great Western Arcade Birmingham B2 5HU United Kingdom +44 121 236 8089 |
Pens for schoolchildren and presidents, the full range is here. Cartier designs, limited editions, an excellent range of Parker pens and designs by Mont Blanc are all part of the collection. There are also stationery items, desk accessories and other gifts—for example small leather items or a filofax. In short, it's an excellent place to get presents, particularly for male relatives. And what's more, the arcade in which it's located is home plenty more useful gift shops and stationers. Review © 2007, Wcities |
