Taxis in Birmingham are plentiful, with a myriad of black cab and minicab companies plying their trade. Black cabs can be booked in advance or hailed on the street if they have their "Taxi" sign lit up. Minicabs must be booked in advance, but will be a little cheaper - it is illegal for them to pick up fares without a prior booking. In the city centre there are a number of large taxi ranks - good bets are outside New Street train station and at the Arcadian Centre on Hurst Street. With black cabs, fares increase after midnight and extra is charged for luggage. Typically, minicabs are licensed to carry up to four passengers, with seating for five in black cabs.
