This is a fund-raising event for a local hospital with 100 elaborately decorated evergreens sponsored and several of them auctioned off. From finger-snapping jazz melodies to mellow blues, this festival brings a wide variety of jazz performers to the Boise Valley. For five days every April, Boise audiences can enjoy jazz greats such as Chuck Mangione, Arturo Sandoval and Ernestine Anderson. Named for Boise jazz pianist Gene Harris, who died in January 1999, the festival also offers a variety of musical workshops for junior high and high school students. Greek lovers, unite! This Greek food extravaganza, which began in 1981, falls on the first Saturday and Sunday of June at the St. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church near downtown Boise. Jazzy tunes drift over the Boise River during this annual July festival. Hosting jazz greats such as Pete Christlieb and Allen Vizzutti, the festival also offers a clinic program for young jazz musicians around the Treasure Valley. All concert proceeds go back into the clinic. Past performers have included Ernie Watts, Bob Mintzer, Jeff Jarvis, Chuck Findley and Don Menza. This old log cabin perches next to the Boise River, a tiny presence under the shadow of the three-story Boise Public Library. Small it might be, but its mission is large. With one of the largest Basque populations outside of Spain, Boise is the perfect place for a festival celebrating its culture. The San Inazio (St. Ignatius) Basque Festival is held on the weekend nearest July 31, which commemorates the saint's birthday. Bright holiday lights decorate the Idaho Botanical Garden during this annual event. Gazebos are outlined in color, and the many trees and bushes in the gardens glow in the night. With more than 100,000 lights in use, this holiday event attracts about 15,000 visitors. Creative display organizers even wrap tumbleweeds in lights. Hot chocolate, cookies, hot spiced cider and wine add to the festivities. Local choirs and bands sing and play holiday music, while bonfires scattered throughout the grounds keep visitors warm.
