From finger-snapping jazz melodies to mellow blues, this festival brings a wide variety of jazz performers to the Boise Valley. For five days every April, Boise audiences can enjoy jazz greats such as Chuck Mangione, Arturo Sandoval and Ernestine Anderson. Named for Boise jazz pianist Gene Harris, who died in January 1999, the festival also offers a variety of musical workshops for junior high and high school students. This entertainment complex is becoming the state's best large-scale concert venue. No trip to Idaho is complete without taking in a rodeo. Luckily, one of the most famous rodeos in the world takes place every July in Nampa, about 16 miles from Boise. This more than 80-year-old tradition has been called "the wildest, fastest show on earth." Bright holiday lights decorate the Idaho Botanical Garden during this annual event. Gazebos are outlined in color, and the many trees and bushes in the gardens glow in the night. With more than 100,000 lights in use, this holiday event attracts about 15,000 visitors. Creative display organizers even wrap tumbleweeds in lights. Hot chocolate, cookies, hot spiced cider and wine add to the festivities. Local choirs and bands sing and play holiday music, while bonfires scattered throughout the grounds keep visitors warm.
